Oatmeal Packets

Does anyone have a recipe that they follow for making their own version of oatmeal packets? I just bought some, and they are so sweet (I should have paid attention, I bought weight control and there is sucralose which is sooo sweet) ~ I know I can google some, but was hoping for some tried and true recipes :) TIA

The only "recipe" I have is

Add boiling water to instant steel cut oats (the night before). Snap a tight lid on it. In the a.m. add 2 Tbls. of PB2 (powdered peanut butter) cook for 1:30. Stir in light maple syrup.....or stir in 1 packet of Splenda (for Chocolate PB2).

The maple and pb2 sounds really good!

I take 1/2 c of old-fashioned oats, add 1 c water, and nuke it on high for 2 minutes. Add whatever fruit, sweetener, spices you like after it has cooked. Faster than the packets if you have to boil the water.

I take 30g (about 1/3c) of old-fashioned oats and add 3/4c water and put in microwave for 90 seconds. It might be a bit watery still so I add psyllium husk, stir quick! Then I add 4g brown sugar and my fruit (half banana plus blueberries, etc). Yum yum. I eat it every morning!

I work FT so most of my meals are during work hours.

I pre-pack and measure Quaker Oats with a 1/4 cup of raisins and some cinnamon. (I use the snack size bags and keep them in my desk drawer) Using the work microwave, add my water and a little vanilla extract - it's ready in a jif! Substitute with cranberries or blueberries. Or cook plain and add fresh bananas, peaches, apples to change it up!

I love (and have been eating every morning for breakfast) 1/2 cup old fashioned oats cooked with water and salt in microwave. I then add about 15-20 grams of sharp cheese (old cheddar, feta, aged provolone) and a bit of hot sauce. I find if I eat a sweet breakfast for some reason I have more appetite later in the day than if I start with a savoury breakfast. Weird.

My kids like swirling peanut butter into their oatmeal.

This is more what I was looking for, "pre-packaged" just like the instant stuff ~ I guess it just depends on personal taste what you put in your packets :)

    Thanks for all the responses!!

    Apple - ginger.....yum!

Watch out for dried banana slices, so many are deep fried.

I don't really like any dried fruit ~ I just use the real stuff and don't put in till ready to eat :)

That's a good idea. I may start prepackaging oatmeal to bring to work because I like to control the amount of sugar and sodium in the foods I eat and that's a fantastic way to do it.

.5 cup quick oats, 1 tbs milled flax seed, 1 tbs chopped walnuts, 1 tbs pb2 and a stevia packet. I put it in a coffee mug at work and add some water and microwave for about 1 minute. Very good and filling.

I totally agree with you, I LOVE oatmeal but packaged oatmeal is too sweet for no reason. This is how I've been making mine:

1/2 cup dry quick cooking oats- 150 cals
4 tsp. brown sugar- 60 cals
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon -5 cals
    2 tbs. PB2 -45 cals

Just add water and heat in microwave about 90 seconds. ~ 260 Calories and SO good!!! Of course you can also add in some mix ins as you please. I've done chopped apples, nuts, or raisins before. I think chocolate chips might be the next thing I try out.

On the weekends I cook up 6 cups (Cooked) steel cut oats, season and have one cup for breakfast. I add an extra cup of water to the rest and then pour them in to a muffin tin( 6 to a tin) to freeze. Once frozen I pop them out of the tin, put them in a zip lock bag and take them with me to work Monday morning.

The frozen pucks easily last a week, fit into a big coffee cup perfectly, and microwave in a few minutes. I find if you don't add the extra cup of water to make the mixture soupy before freezing that they are too thick when microwaved.

You can make a big batch and portion it out if you're short on time. Baked oatmeal is also a good option

I use 40 grams oatmeal, 100 grams whole milk, 100 grams water, a little salt. Cook on stovetop for 8-10 minutes (or in microwave for 2x2 minutes). Serve with a lump of butter.

Actually I make several types of porridge like that - millet (soak first), polenta (only 4 minutes), semolina/cream of wheat (add more water).

No - not weird at all, because blood sugar spike and drop from the sugar.

Works great for me as well, I use milk instead of water to get some protein it. I also add 1 T. of Trader Joe's Sun flower nut butter. Sometimes a 1/3 of a banana in it as well. Very very tasty and filling as well.

I prefer using the old-fashion oats as well as they haven't been processed quite as much. Though I do love my steel oats too!

Instead of making packets you could have a bowl, measuring cup and your oatmeal container next to your microwave when you go to bed... Everything quick and easy for the AM... I haven't used them for a very long time (the pre-packaged) but I recall them being powdery and in tiny pieces rather than Old-Fashioned are.

i don't really do the packets anymore. Easier to just make ahead and portion. For mix-ins, my personal fav is PB2 with raisins for sweetness. Or 1 tbl of maple syrup and a sprinkle of walnut pieces.. or freeze dried strawberries, vanilla extract, and some milk... or fry a banana in a little butter and rum extract (banana fosters oatmeal... mmmm).

So many possibilities, not enough calories.

I have been doing blueberry/coconut (the sweetened kind for sweetness)/sliced almond for the last two weeks. I try and do fresh fruit so its usually whatever is in season :) I am going to try and do a savory oatmeal. That sounds yummy.

I make my own packets! Though my recent recipe has kind of a weird texture, so I think I will add less protein powder next batch.
35g toasted rolled oats, semi-ground into smaller pieces (but not too finely ground)
    1/4 tsp cinnamon
dash of salt, dash of nutmeg
    1/2 tsp chia seeds
    1/2 tbsp ground flaxseed
    1/2 tsp truvia sweetener
    1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp whey protein powder concentrate (plain)

I've also made it with chopped pecans and heavier on the cinnamon. It's pretty good.
