Diet and supplements

So since the beginning of June I have been on a super low carb diet (I've lost about 6 pounds with excercise as well) and low intensity cardio 6 days a week and for a half hour followed with ab workouts. I am not sure if I should stay on that diet or go on a low calorie diet. I'm 5"3, 108 lbs, and looking to define my abs and tone my whole body. Also I've been taking muscle milk protein powder, but I would like to buy new powder because I hate the chocolate taste but I don't know what I'm supposed to be looking for. I heard cellucor is good.

Well the whole point of weight loss is that you take in less calories than your body needs to maintain its weight so you make a caloric deficit.

Low carbing doesn't make you lose fat without a caloric deficit, it just makes you lose water weight.

Judging from your BMI, you don't really need to lose any weight. Your BMI is 19.1 which is near the lower end of the healthy spectrum. I would advise a recomp or bulk.

You don't need protein powder. Get it from real food like chicken breasts, tuna, beans and lentils etc.

At your stats, if you aren't seeing the definition you want it's because you lack the muscle mass. I might suggest eating at maintenance, and incorporate resistance training for a while and reassess. "Tone" is the result of stripping excess body fat to reveal muscle, but if you lack the muscle, continuing to reduce fat will have nothing to show.

I am new to fitness can you explain what a recomp and bulk is. And I am looking for protein powder because no matter how much I eat a day I don't consume enough protein, so any suggestions? Do you have any experience with cellucor?

I do not go to a gym, do you know any at home exercises that contain resistance. I have a treadmill and am looking into getting weights. What does eating at maintenance mean? I'm sorry I just want to learn as much as I can

A lot of the over the counter diet supplements are garbage. They have the equivalent amount of caffeine to three cups of coffee and a bunch of niacin. (heads up in case there is a sensitivity.)

They don't work unless you are in a calorie deficit. Just skip the pills and save your money.

FWIW- I did try cellucor HD and they didn't work until I started counting my calories.

You can do a lot with just your body weight, especially as a beginner. Do a Google search for body weight training, or check out books like Convict Conditioning and You Are Your Own Gym. Great places to start.

A bulk is where you create a calorie surplus (so you eat more than you need to maintain your weight), you generally have a weight lifting program with a progressive overload to build muscle.

As for a recomp, I can't really explain because I have no idea what it is. Could someone help me and OP out here? Lol.

I'll try and simplify this for you:

Maintenance; your body has a set amount of calories it needs to maintain it's weight. This is called your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure).

If you want to lose weight, you eat below your maintenance, this is called a caloric deficit.
If you want to gain weight, you eat above your maintenance, this is called a caloric surplus.

Ok thank you! I was thinking of transitioning into a calorie deficit Maybe that would help with the supplements? Is it healthy to maintain a calorie deficit and still consume low carbs?

OP you don't need a calorie deficit. You're already at a healthy weight. You don't particularly needs supplements, unless you have a hard time with micronutrients and such. I wouldn't bother low carbing particularly, I only think it's needed for medical purposes such as refractory epilepsy or PCOS.

OP you don't need to lose any more weight.

You do not likely need a deficit, and unless you have a medical condition don't worry about low carbs. Read what Isaack wrote again.

You need to be in a caloric surplus to gain muscle, generally speaking. I advise heading over to the weight gain section and reading the stickies.

Agree with this. The folks in that room are awesome. You will get all the help you need. They are also blunt, but honest and helpful.

It's going to be hard to gain muscle if you aren't doing a progressive weight lifting program. If you have the equipment at home, then you can do a program, but if not, then you need to find a gym so you can start to lift. Another option is to start with a body resistance routine, but you will probably plateau fairly quickly and you will need to transition to weights.

Also, just to clarify, when you gain muscle, you will also be gaining fat. So you will be required to cut after (essentially, bulk/cut cycle). Here is a good thread that will teach you the basics of bulking. If you want to take another route you can try a recomp as shown here. A recomp, while slow, might be beneficial for you now.
