Got bad news- eat low carb or die :(

went to the dr who told me my a1c was 11.1 and my pacers is practically dead. Dr put me on medal and told me to cut carbs to 50-60 grams a day. If not, kidneys will soon follow and in 5 years I would be on dialysis. I'm so upset. I workout regularly and watch what I eat. He told me its genetics. I weigh 162 am 5' 9 with a 31 waist! Any low or zero carb ideas for bread?

Try no bread
It will be a change but worth it.
Sorry for your health challenges.

The "wheat belly diet" books have some gluten-free alternatives for bread. They're made with almond flour, coconut flour, flaxseed, etc. so they have lots of protein and fiber but few carbs. They're very filling. You can find a lot of the recipes online just by googling without having to buy any of the books.
I recommend these especially, but there's tons of other good stuff:

Hopefully you can find some recipes you like and stay healthy! Best of luck!0 -

Pacers were bad when Paul George was hurt. He is healthy this year and they signed Matta Ellis so there is hope!0 -
Yes- I am hopeful! Thank u for the words of encouragement.0

Also hopefully the doctor told you about pairing the carbs with protein? In other words, don't have just carbs for breakfast (even if the carbs are within your daily allowance) -- have some protein with it. So half a bagel with peanut butter is better than bagel with jelly. And toast with butter and jam (my personal favorite before my a1c was found to be high) is horrible to eat by itself, but an egg with one piece of toast with jam is better. etc... Keep the daily carbs within whatever the doctor told you and always always add protein to the meal.

Pacer/Pancreas? Metal/Metformin?
Since you take good care of yourself I think you have a good shot of getting this under control. You will learn to recognize the signs of low blood / high blood sugars and make the nutritional adjustments to take over what your pancreas used to take care of automatically.
Get used to eating on a routine, no skipping.
Try and balance each meal/snack with all the macros included. I like the idea of getting any carbs you do allow yourself from nuts.
Knowledge is power. Get yourself a glucometer and start testing your fasting blood sugar and two hours after meals. You will learn what foods (and amounts) work well and which ones don't.0 -

Use large lettuce leaves in place of bread for sandwichs. There are low carb breads on the market (The Great Low Carb Bread Company, Toufayan, Mama Lupe) but with so few carbs in your allowance you might want to save them for a tastier carb. Low carb breads tend to be either dry or rubbery.0

Join the low carber and Keto groups here and you are going to find some wonderfully supportive people who are struggling with controlling their diets for health reasons also. There are lots of food ideas there as well.
I wish you the best. You are already so good with keeping fit, a diet change will be easy for you. Get focused and stay strong and healthy. Like any lifestyle change, the first few days/weeks will be the hardest. Once you get through those, if you decide to go keto, you are going to feel great!0 -
The keto group on reddit is active and amazingly supportive: https://reddit.com/r/keto
You definitely are not alone. Best wishes to you!
I'm sorry about your diagnosis. Keto on reddit is awesome and you will find a lot of support there.

Genetics can be a ******. Sorry to hear it, mate, but you're getting some solid advice here.
Good luck!

Straywolf you don't really mention if you're on insulin? A very low carb diet on insulin will make you at a high risk for low blood sugars. Are your fasting blood sugars high in the morning before food? Your liver makes its own sugar and if your pancreas can't handle that amount of sugar then your meds need to be adjusted.0

You can TOTALLY do this! I am happy to see you are motivated to be as healthy as possible and change what you can (some of us just have the faulty genetics). Good luck to you0

I like Alvarado St Bakery bread, which is made from sprouted grains instead of traditional flour.
I haven't tried their Diabetic Lifestyles Bread:
In their daily life, it's very important for diabetics to know the insulin response of a food in order to predict their blood sugar response. "Diabetic Lifestyles Bread", a 100% Sprouted Whole Grain recipe, was submitted for testing to the Glycemic Research Institute in Washington, D.C. and was clinically proven to be Low Glycemic with a Low Glycemic Load when fed to diabetics. Actual clinical results show a Glycemic Index of 5.0 on the glucose scale (0-100) and Glycemic Load of 0.9 per serving. Additionally, diabetics experienced a reduction in blood glucose by the end of the testing period! Made entirely with organic sprouted whole wheat and sweetened only with organic fruit, this delicious recipe contains no refined sugars, no added oil, and no flour. We're confident that you'll enjoy this unique bread as a part of your healthy lifestyle.
I get Essential Flax Seed Bread
Our Essential Flax Seed Bread is a great source of Omega 3 and 6. This “Essential” bread has the lowest calories of all our breads, as well as the lowest fat, lowest sodium and lowest carbs. This great tasting bread is available through our on-line store, as well as in supermarkets and natural food stores throughout the country.
Or their multi grain.0 -
So what the doctor told you to do, not what strangers online advise. The doctor can refer to a dietitian if you need help with your diet.0

Yam Shirataki noodles (not tofu). No carbs and no calories. Take some getting used to but I figured out how to work with them and I love them. They're at Asian grocers and packed in water. Not a substitute for Italian dishes, but stir fry is amazing. I could theoretically eat carbs but I haven't had pasta or real bread since March. Too many calories, not worth it. Shirataki yam- good stuff.0

Since you are diabetic, you should be under the care of a physician, on meds, and be advised by a dietitian. You should not be simply going low carb, my friend.
From a type II diabetic,

There are plenty of low-carbers who can advise the OP of different foods to try. You do not need a doctor for everything; if they already have a diagnosis and plan set up (ie: limiting carbs), it's completely reasonable for the OP to ask for food suggestions.0
