Hi, at the minute I'm at home for two months over summer. But, in September I will be moving back to University, there I find it difficult to stick to healthy eating and exercise mostly due to how little my friends and flatmates are doing. I get extremely unmotivated at uni so i'm really worried I'm going to lose weight then stop trying when I move back. I was wondering if anyone else has this issue? Or if anyone has any tips on staying motivated when everyone around you isn't. Thank you!!

    I'm at University in Edinburgh!

Don't buy foods you will snack on. I keep my flat empty of things like biscuits, crisps, chocolate bars and the like.

Plan your days food the day before or when you get up in the morning. It's so easy to just leave Uni, go to the shop next to it and grab a few treats because you think you have calories left. Pre log your day so you know if you do actually have space to grab a quick treat.

Drop the notion that you have to eat healthily. Eating healthily and weight loss are two separate things. I've found so many people quit because they cannot live a lifestyle of salads and tuna. In reality you can eat basically whatever you want. I like to separate foods into good and bad choices for myself. I know I can eat McDonalds (I lost over 3 stone in the period of a year or so while eating fast food 3-4 days a week every week) and still lose weight, however I also know I'll be extremely unsatisfied the rest of the day. Try and find a balance.

Ignore what your flat mates do. This is your journey. You can't blame your flat mates being unmotivated as a factor of you potentially being unmotivated. Take responsibility for your own motivation. As said below, my flat mates regularly get takeaways. It's as simple as saying no.

Work on your mental strength. When you accept that only you are responsible for your actions you can move forward. What I mean by this is a lot of people blame their weight gain and lack of motivation on outside things (stress, exams, relationship complications, deaths etc.) Accept that every time you cheat it is not the fault of some outside matter, it's because you are weak mentally. And that's something that can be worked on. You can always move forward. This is the main thing that has helped me. My flatmates regularly buy takeaways, eat out and things like that. It's my decision not to as I find my journey is more important than 10 minutes of satisfaction followed by hours to days of guilt.

Yeah crisps are my biggest weakness haha so I'll make sure not to have any in! Very true I'm guilty of just popping in the shop and buying crap so I'll make sure I start planning my weeks food.
I'm hoping not eating takeaways and crap while I'm at home will get rid of the cravings for junk so potentially I'll have a stronger mind set and find it easier to say no. But yeah I agree you're right I shouldn't blame other people for my lack of motivation!

Thanks for replying you were really helpful, and congratulations on losing the 3 stone that's amazing!

I live in a dorm at Rutgers University during the fall and spring! Last year I gained a few pounds and I'm scared I will again starting September...I am currently living the healthiest I ever have and still have to lose at least 40 lbs so I'm on the same boat as you!

At uni its the worst. We have all these fast food places in the cafeteria and my friends always want to have lunch dates or go to the mall that is close to my uni. They tempt me so much and will say I'm being a party pooper if I don't eat with them. So I feel bad and give in. Its frustrating. I cannot eat clean with them and my one friend will say she wishes she could lose weight like mw but shes always eating unhealthily and when she does she says she doesn't care she's fine with her body but then will complain again !!

I'm a Med student. Eat breakfast at home and pack ur lunch to school. This does not only help me with my daily caloric goal, it also helps with right choice of food.

It's really comforting knowing I'm not the only one panicking! I hope we can both stick to it and good luck with the 40 pounds!

Yeah that's a good idea as I tend to just eat out and buy crap or even miss the meal if I have uni all day

I know we have so many fast food places and there's nights out and cocktails which are always really tempting! I know exactly what you mean it is hard to eat healthy at uni there's so much pressure and loads of temptation. However I would say don't feel guilty for eating healthily and losing weight you've put the hard work and determination in, so you deserve the results!

I go to the cafeteria with my friends but while they order and eat whatever they want, I open my food flask and eat my home made food. The only issue is that I have to wake up early to cook before leaving home which is sometimes inconvenient.

I lost quite a bit when I started college. It was a combination of walking to class (long distances and many hills) and eating set servings in the dining hall (I went to the a la carte dining halls rather than all-you-can-eat style). It really increased my activity levels.

That's good! I wish I'd lost weight, I'm going into my third year and I've only lost the odd pound while here which I later put on. I didn't put on a great amount just a couple of pounds luckily! But I know it's really common for people to put on weight when they go uni.

Hello! I am currently in college... not yet in a university. However, I'm taking 3 classes now during the summer, then my schedule will do a flip next semester and with 4 classes. What I do is set a schedule. I wake up at a set time, eat breakfast, workout, shower, eat lunch, then leave for class. When I get back home its about dinner time. So if you want to fit exercise in, you will need to set aside a time specifically for that, the same time each time to make it a habit. It can be the morning if you want, or after class if thats better for you. Scheduling times that you will eat is also good because it can help to avoid snacking, since you know what time you will be eating again. Hope that helps!

Hi! Yeah my timetable is different everyday of the week, so it would make sense to do it on the evening. But, that's a good idea scheduling everything, that way it'd become part of a routine. That way exercise and healthy eating shouldn't feel like a chore but just an everyday task. This was really helpful, thank you very much!
