Going on vacation- Golden Corral

I had no idea people hated Golden Corral so much! lol. I've gone several times due to picky children or being with a family group where everyone had differing tastes. I think your kids will enjoy the chocolate fountain, my daughter always did. The salad bar selection is decent. I have managed to eat there within my calories.0

you could not pay me to eat at golden corral.
but then, i have about 500 food rules, and buffets of any kind violate about 90% of them.....0 -

I can't knock it, actually. I've never been to one. I would suggest Yelp or checking out local newspaper sites for better suggestions, though.
It's not a vacation destination, it's where we will pass through anyways. You think you've seen stupid then u read assumptions like this.

If you and your family are coming down to Washington via I-5 south from the Canadian border there are several casinos that have good food if you really want a buffet. The Tulalip Casino is right next to the Seattle Premium Outlets and it has really good food. Certainly something for everyone. Otherwise you can't beat the food scene in Seattle. So many local restaurants with amazing food. Pike Place is also a mecca of amazing fresh things to eat!
Thank u we actually went to Seattle in the spring and had a great time there...enjoyed pike place market as well.0 -

Yes my kids are excited strictly for the chocolate fountain and cotton candy

you got all these opinions because there really aren't any "better tasting foods" there...
pretty much any buffet i've ever been too pretty much sucks...i personally don't know how people stomach that slop...not just GC...buffets in general...that *kitten* barely passes as food.0 -

I've tried several of the seafood items and they weren't bad. I usually make a big salad and maybe have some cottage cheese on the side for protein. The hot vegetables like green beans, corn, and squash are pretty good. I like that they have nutrition info with calories and allergens listed. When my dad was alive he loved to stop at Golden Corral so honestly I have happy memories of going there!0 -
if there were a category in the diary for intake of self-righteousness, this thread would put me in the black for at least a month. holy *kitten*.0

OP, please bookmark this thread and update it after you come back. Let us know how you and the kiddos liked the GC.0

so you eat bread and water, I assume?0 -
OP - I am not a fan of golden coral but since you have kids and what not, I can see how that would be appealing for them.
They have all kinds of options that you can pick from grilled chicken, vegetables, sirloin, etc....I would just not expect it to be "good" food....and by good, I mean taste...
but that is just my .020 -
Love the commercials too! Can I ask why you would not be able to walk straight?0

I think people are missing the point she has a 7yo who just wants cotton candy and chocolate fountain of course she's going to Golden Corral. Besides you cant get much more of the American experience that ol' GC. I suggest topping it off with a shopping trip to Wal-Mart.
Anyways, if I was you I'd just splurge and eat the dessert. Nothing wrong with having a meal of dessert. Or you can go superior mode and make the biggest salad of your life piled with all the raw veggies.0 -
Someone mentioned you might be near a Casino. Maybe you can head to the casino for the free buffet?0

Our four kids, my wife and I love Golden Corral. We think the food is good and affordable. MFP has most, if not all, the foods listed, so you can keep track of what you want to eat. Our kids love it because of the selection of foods and dessert.
Please don't let all the nay sayers dissuade you and your family from an enjoyable time. Not every restaurant we eat at has to serve the most flavorful, most presentable, most intricate foods. You're on vacation, so enjoy life. You can enjoy it there as much as you can enjoy it at a 5 star restaurant. It's just a family friendly place with a variety of affordable food.
My advice would be to just log what you eat and be accountable. Since finding MFP and logging, I can pretty much eat anywhere now that I understand eating within my calories.
Enjoy!

I like Golden Coral, though we have not been in years, but one just opened up in our town!
No, it's not top-quality food. It's a massive buffet. I love it for kids because there will be *something* they will eat. I love their yeast rolls.0 -
I agree with all the above posters on just skipping the Corral and eating someplace nicer for your vacation. But somehow Chico's Tacos won best local Mexican restaurant in our city with hundreds of awesome family owned Mexican places, and I don't consider Chicos to even be food, much less good food. So different strokes for different folks. It's been at least a decade since I last ate at Golden Corral and it was on the Mexican border rather than the Canadian border, but the item I liked best was the corn nuggets. They are creamed corn breaded in bite size nuggets and deep fried. They are super delicious dipped in brown mustard.0

The chocolate fountain will be a fun experience for your kiddo and who doesn't love cotton candy. GC isn't great but it's not gross...the salad bar is great, the main dishes are hit and miss (I typically eat most of the main dishes your don't eat so I don't have a good suggestion), and the bread pudding or chocolate chess pie are my desserts of choice. Make sure you try one of their rolls with honey butter, my son could live on their rolls.0

i don't think anyone came to this thread with unrealistic expectations regarding a chain buffet restaurant. the OP asked a simple question, and all the hipster foodie folks piled on to make sure we all knew how disgusting they thought GC was. message received. we get it. there's something in the world that causes you distress.
as some of the more level-headed folks pointed out, almost all the GC food is in the database and easily logged.
i travel...a lot. and i have to eat on the road...a lot. and often, i'm faced with the choice of whether to stop at GC or settle for a baconator/big mac/whopper/etc., and if i get to make that choice, i'll choose GC every time. same thing with Cracker Barrel. it's road food. there's not gonna be a Zagat rating on Yelp, and if you choose wisely, you can leave relatively satisfied without overdosing on crappy calories.
maybe, in the grand scheme of things, it's a choice akin to deciding which one of the ladies at the nursing home you invite to the prom, but it's not the worst possible choice you could make.
and...she has kids. and her kids want to go to GC. cut her a break.

It's not that serious, though.0 -
Golden Corral gives me a cleanse for the rest of the night. I would skip it.katharmonic wrote: »Please do not spend any vacation time at Golden Corral. Literally almost anything would be better.
both of these are accurate.
if she wants a chocolate fountain- go to a real place- like the Melting pot or something where they do real chocolate (although they are over priced and oiy- it's mediocre) it's still worlds above Golden Corral.

Coming to America I would suggest the following places:
Cracker Barrel
IHOP
Waffle House
Big Boy
Sizzler
Oh if you keep writing on this thread you will get Golden Coral coupons.0 -

Um, OP knew nothing about GC but said she was looking for "cool restaurants' while on vacation. GC is about as
"cool" as McD's or Waffle House. It's the very epitome of cheap eats, both in price and quality, and so it hardly qualifies to most people as a vacation destination. What's wrong with telling her this? OP came to this thread seeking opinions while having none of her own so really there's no need to "cut her a break."0 -

Does anyone know of a candle or wall scent that smells like Waffle House, because its amazing!
As far as GC goes, yeah, its not quantity over quality, but it can be palatable. Just stick to the salad bar and grilled/baked meats and you will be fine Everything in moderation.0 -
