Hi guys,

I know myfitnesspal doesn't really do this, but I'm wondering if anybody has any tools or tips for calculating the calories I'm burning during my resistance training!

I'm in the gym 5 days a week doing relatively intense 1hr weight sessions so I'm sure it's not zero and I'd like to get an exact sort of idea.

Thanks. :)

wear a heart rate monitor and use an app that shows calories burnt. I use a mio wrist heart monitor and icardio app on my ipad.

You can add weight lifting as a cardio exercise on mfp and it will calculate cals but beware that mfp tends to over estimate burns. Best way is with a hr monitor and calorie counter.

Heart rate monitors are good for steady state cardio, only.

Calorie burns vary so much for lifting because of rests between sets/reps and the amount of weight lifted - stuff like that.

When I was logging my exercise, I gave myself about 200 calories per hour at the gym (which had a bit of cardio before/after my lifting session). Lifting is one of the reasons I switched over to the TDEE method.

I think you'll probably have to play around with your numbers to find out what works for you - but always err on the side of caution. It's better to be under than over :)

Oh and weight lifting/strength training is in the cardio database here on MFP.
