so I was wondering if I could lose weight this way - I would eat 700 calories a day and burn off 1142 calories each day through exercise I would do this every day , would this mean I will lose weight ?? I'm really confused :/

No. You would be starving yourself. Enter your stats into MFP and eat the calories it recommends.

you would lose a lot more than weight!

Yes, you'd lose weight. You'd also end up in hospital if you could keep it up for any considerable amount of time...

Not sure why you think you have to go so drastic. Just eat the calories MFP has recommended to you, eat back your exercise calories, and you'll do fine. If you burn off more than you're eating through exercise, what's your body going to live off of?

Okay so should I burn off the amount I eat ?

Netting -300 calories is not the goal. If you post your stats (weight, height) the very smart and helpful people here can give you some more appropriate goals.

Or, put your information into the MFP ap, set your weightloss to 1 lb per week, log your exercise and food (make sure to weigh your food for accuracy) and follow the goals the ap sets.

No, I repeat - if you burn off what you eat, what will your body live off of?? You can only burn so much fat in a day.

Eat back your exercise calories (or at least half of them). You need food to live.

    This would be starvation.

There's a lot of good information here on MFP. Please take some time to read the posts linked in the thread below and learn how MFP works. You do not need to starve yourself and/or exercise excessively to lose weight.

OP your body needs calories to survive. As another poster said enter stats into MFP and eat recommended calories as a starting point.

OP, to lose weight you need to eat less calories than you burn; this is called eating at a deficit. A deficit of 500 calories is generally the recommended.

Use MFP to find out how many calories you should be eating a day by filling in all the information (height, weight, activity level, how much you want to lose a week- 1 to 1.5 pounds is the most realistic) and then it will tell you how many calories you should eat a day to create that deficit.

For example, 1lb = 3500 calories. So if you wanted to lose 1lb per week, your deficit would be 500 calories, as over the week that would add up to 3,500. If you tell MFP this is what you want to lose a week, it will calculate your deficit and then give you the total number of calories you should be eating a day to achieve this.

If you were to eat the same amount of calories you burned a day, you would maintain your weight. If you eat more calories than you burn a day, you will gain weight.

Buy a food scale, weigh and log everything and good luck!

You are not "confused."You are looking for approval for a starvation diet, which you are not going to find here. Use MFP how it's meant to be used.

    MFP = MyFitnessPal.

Also I'd personally recommend using the website over the app if you can, I think it's waaay easier.

Then you're probably eating more than you realize. You need to come onto the website and read some of the tips. This thread should help you:

No. If MFP tells you to eat 1,200 a day, you should eat 1,200 a day. That goal already has a deficit for weight loss built in. So if you burn calories on top of the activity level that you entered when setting your goals, you should also eat those calories back. Your net calories should be 1,200.

Some people find that the exercise calorie burns are inflated, so they only eat 25-75% of them.

If you only eat 800 calories a day, your body will not get proper nutrition to function.

    No. Net 1200 calories.

Or at least if you exercise 500, and have a goal of 1200 calories, eat half of the exercise calories back so the "net" calories is closer to 950-1000 (though I highly suggest a net of at least 1200).

No, that would mean you net only 300 each day (net = calories eaten - calories burnt through exercise, you want to net your calorie goal). As @janejellyroll said, if it's given you 1200, you eat 1200. If you then do extra exercise, you eat back your exercise calories (or some of them, at least).

No, MFP sets up your goals with a deficit already calculated in (i.e. you would lose weight even if you did not exercise).

Therefore you should eat 1200 PLUS exercise calories. MFP tends to overestimate exercise calorie burns so initially it would be advisable to eat back e.g. 50% of them. (then monitor your results and reassess).

So if you're burning 500 calories per day, try eating 1200 + 250 = 1450 calories per day.

In addition to this, 2lbs per week weight loss is quite an aggressive weight loss goal. Unless you have a lot of weight to lose, 1 lb per week is a more suitable goal for most people so you may wish to reassess your 1200 calorie goal.

Oh just noticed you only have 14 pounds to lose on your profile, is this correct? If it is, then 0.5-1lb/week would be a better goal depending on how much you currently weigh, 2lbs/week is way too aggressive.

@caisha008 - with only 14 pounds to lose, losing 2 # per week is a very aggressive goal. Try setting it for 0.5 # per week.

What you're probably not doing correctly is logging your food. Do you use a digital food scale?

You seem very very confused about TDEE, deficit, and what all the numbers mean.

Just eat the 1200 that MFP says you need, make sure you log every single thing that goes into your mouth, and use a food scale.

Because you're so confused about what's going on right now, I would say don't bother exercising yet. Focus on understanding diet, and calories. Do a lot more reading. In a month, when you understand everything, and you've lost a few pounds, you can start working exercise into your day.

    Keep reading and learning.

Assuming your goal of 14lbs is correct, set your goal to 1lb/week if you're overweight and 0.5lbs/week if you're not. Eat what it suggests. Use a food scale to weigh everything you can. Exercise if you want to, but you don't have to.
