...freak out a little at the amount of oil/butter they use??
They say "I'm just going to add a little oil/butter to the pan/marinade/over the top/etc. and they pour out a frickin bucket full (ok, slight exaggeration...) and I'm just like "A little??? That's like 200/2000 calories worth! That's half my bloody calories for the meal/day/week/month!!"
Ok. Just needed to get that out. I feel much better now .

I love watching cooking shows, but can't make about 80% of what I see. Heavy whipping cream here, two sticks of butter there, deep-fried donut here, ice cream there.
They just reran Alton Brown's "Churn Baby Churn." I could almost taste the ice cream, lol.0 -
I've been watching "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" lately... God I wish I could eat that stuff and lose weight... Luckily, I don't live in America, so I can't just go to those restaurants :P.0

I always watch cooking shows. Bobby Flay is my favorite chef. Some of it you can have, you just have to eat it in moderation.0

Now you know why restaurant food can kick you right out of your calorie limits. When cooking for others calories are not usually your concern. As for cooking shows, I watch them alot in Italy. I just modify the fats (usually the culprits) to enter into my allowance for the day. They are great for ideas.0

I only watch Flip My Food. Chef Jeff is big on big taste with low fat so I don't have that issue. I used to work for the company that produced Paula Deen's magazine, oh my the salt and butter. Someone in the office made a dish from the magazine once and it was so salty I couldn't eat it.0

I watch cooking shows quite frequently. I lot of the food I make and have eaten while loosing weight are recipes from Food Network chefs and their cooking shows. Its all about moderation, and sometimes I swap ingredients for something healthier.0

Btw, I definitely agree that cooking show recipes can be modified or eaten in moderation, and I love watching them . I just find it amusing to see them refer to a cup full of oil as "a little", "drizzle", "sprinkling", "just a bit" etc xD.0

It is the only tv that I watch. Not many do healthy recipes, but I do get good ideas and sometimes try to modify for a more calorie friendly recipe to fit into my calorie allotment.

I love Food Network! Makes me hungry, though, so I can only even watch food TV in moderation.
I love watching Chopped and Iron Chef (original or America). Luurrrvvvee Alton Brown, Sunny (don't remember her last name), Michael Simon. Giada rubs me the wrong way, and I do like Paula Deen. Rachael Ray always seems mad in her shows. And I love the old Emeril Live shows! But yes! Food porn!0 -

I can't stand when they're unsanitary! Lemme handle this raw chicken and then touch everything in sight. And then they serve it up to judges (or to the staff if it isn't a competition--surely all that food doesn't go to waste).0 -

I didn't like Paula Deen much and that Pioneer Woman...I dunno. Don't like her. I can only take so much of the Barefoot Contessa, too. Rachael Ray, though, has to be the hardest one to watch. So obnoxious and rude. Yeesh!
I liked Emeril. Like Bobby Flay and Kelsey Nixon. I don't love Kelsey's show - she's too dang perky for me - but her recipes are good.
And I loved Alton Brown. Food Network out to put up a statue of him, lol.
Good Eats is the best cooking show that ever aired.

The best example ever would be found on one episode of "Secrets of a Restauant Chef". Anne Burrell was making some kind of braised pork recipie and she had this GIGANTIC bottle of olive oil with a pour spout on it. By the end of the episode she had added enough "just a drizzle"s of oil that the bottle was nearly empty! No wonder restaurant meals taste so good (and are so high in calories)!
I don't like Rachel Ray much. She's never made a single dish that I've liked before, her voice has that course smoker' tone to it, and she's not and actual chef in the first place. Red Dummond (the pioneer lady) is much more skilled in her food blogging than she is at being a cooking show host. She seems really stiff on TV, but her blogging and photography make her look much more animated. Ina Garten is okay sometimes, but I personally think that she can come across as a bit snobbish sometimes.
I like Giada pretty well. Her recipies seem to be more in line with dishes that most people could actually cook on a semi-regular basis. Same sort of deal as Bobby Flay. I adore watching Guy Fieri, but his dishes aren't in line with how I prefer to cook. Too much meat -- I'm vegetarian 90% of the time due to budget concerns. He's more of a fun TV personality to me than anything.
While she isn't on the Food Network, I really like watching Carla Hall cook. Sweets and baking are two things that I've always loved, and she has such a perky personality that it's hard to NOT get Exocets about cooking when you're watching her make something.0 -
I love cookery shows, but watch mostly UK ones. Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay are great - and both do recipes that are clearly geared towards healthy eating. Jamie is a massive advocate for childhood healthy eating, as is Gordon, and I think that influences the kind of things they make on TV. They still show indulgent desserts and blow out main dishes, but the message isn't 'stick an entire bottle of oil in here' for every dish! I feel as though UK cookery shows are geared towards a more 'ethical' viewer - those who care deeply about what they eat, where the ingredients come from, things like reducing food wastage, food miles and all that stuff. So that means the content of UK cookery shows is probably vastly different from the US.
My food porn though is The Great British Bake Off - British MFP-ers will understand! It's the most amazing show to watch, love it so much, and it's coming back very soon! It may well be my favourite show on TV - I've just never watched it without a cup of tea and biscuit! So, my calorie count may have to factor in 'Biscuit Wednesdays' for that show!0 -
I love The Great British Bakeoff!!! I thought it knew how to make just about every treat there was until I started watching that show. Now I know there are an endless supply of treats to learn to make...but learning how to do it well means tasting it and that's kind of out right now.
I'm not a fan of reality TV, but truly enjoy that show. (Not British, watch it on public TV.)0 -

I'm addicted to Masterchef Australia right now, they seem to prepare dishes that are a bit healthier than your standard cooking show fare.0

Ditto on "Secrets of a Restaurant Chef". I'm usually on the elliptical when that show comes on, and the SALT! OMG! No wonder she is as thick as a tree trunk.0
