I never feel motivated by it and I lose interest so fast! I sometimes try and work out at home if I've not been able to get to the gym at lunch but its just not the same...Kudos to all those who work out at home and STICK to it!! I find it hard work!

That's interesting, I found the opposite to be true. Lots of things about the gym are annoying but doing it at home means everything is exactly the way you want it. Even down to the music selection. I'd never go back to the gym.0

I agree, If I try and do it at home I find other things to do such as the laundry or dishes, or anything really because I think it needs done first. So the gym is just easier and it works and I look forward to that time away from the house.
Besides sometimes you find, new work outs, friends, work out partners, different motivation ect at a gym and thats my favorite part since I am new to the area!0 -
I tend to get way more distracted at the gym because there's a ton of equipment that I don't have at home. At home, I go to the basement, do my workout, and that's it. At the gym, I start doing one thing and then see a piece of equipment I haven't used so I go check that out and then I see something else and go check that out. I can easily lose 2.5 hours in the gym where my longest workout at home takes half that.0

Agreed! I feel like I can stop whenever I want when I workout at home (and usually do by the third set of an HIIT video), but if I allocate gym time, I'm going to make sure I get all my planned sets/reps in while I'm there. There's something about the fact that someone /could/ be watching that is a great motivator.0

Pretty much this0 -
I'm ok working out at home as long as I have a ton of energy, but when I'm tired, I slack off. With the same amout of fatigue, if I go to the gym instead, I work way harder because I know people are watching. In fact, I deliberately stand at the front of group classes because I work harder if I know more people can see me. I will punk out if I stand at the back.0

I work from home so the gear in the garage is just darn convenient. My lunch break may shift from day to day based on workload so I just hit the garage whenever it fits in each day. It also gets rid of the commute time to and from the gym so its just more efficient for me.0

I find myself way too willing to give up at home. I treat the gym like a library. It's a zone of concentration for that subject. I find myself pushing harder at the gym, just like I find myself being more productive at a library for school.0

I agree. At home I never have to wait for someone else to finish with the equipment I need, I know exactly where everything is, I don't have to deal with people who don't re-rack the weights, don't wipe down the bench, people who smell weird... In short, I don't have to deal with people. It's just me in my home gym, listening to the music I want, going at my own pace, at whatever time is convenient for me. I love it. But, I can certainly understand those who need a more social environment to motivate them.0 -
At the gym, you can end up with options overload, or fall into a routine.
At home, very easy to get interrupted, less easy to make excuses ( bad weather driving, etc ).
Go with what works for you. Good to see you realize the limitation.0 -
The extra time commitment of driving to and from the gym was the determining factor for me going with a home gym. Not to mention my gym is actually open 24/7.0
-
I agree. I don't have the willpower to work out at home. Other than my TRX, I need to go to a gym, class, or get outside. If it takes effort me me to get somewhere to work out, I will finish it. But if I'm at home, I will get distracted and bail.0

I agree, working out in the gym is way better, when you buy new equipment, you get excited and you want to try them, then you think maybe the gym is not that important anymore .. but after a week or so the new treadmill, raw machine, or the new mat are not that exciting anymore and you start losing interest and skipping hours of workout day after day ..
Gym for me is way better, but I believe sometimes gym can be very intimating especially when you have a lot of weight to lose or suddenly you gained a lot of weight, and people at your gym are not friendly enough or helpful. It's a challenge, so finding the right gym is essential.0 -
I've recently started working out at home and I find that I can try out new exercise routines without feeling embarrassed about how I look. However, I also enjoy classes rather than the machines at the gym because I feel like time just drags and drags and drags and 10min feels like an hour.0
-
I like doing both and mixing up my workouts. I do my weightlifting at the Gym and save my cardio workouts for home.0
-
I prefer home workouts. Don't need to get in the car and drive there, nobody cares how ratty my t-shirt and shorts are, no excuses because I have the equipment right here. It's part of my morning routine - get up , exercise, shower, coffee, start working.0

I love my basement gym but I don't like being alone when working with heavy weights. I have my rack and everything and there is just something assuring about having others around just in case. I will say that I hate the benches at my gym because they are very slippery so I tend to bench at home all the time. I just need a spotter when testing my bench max again for security.
Since I have to go towards the gym to get to work it makes it easy to go. When the weather gets nasty I love that I can avoid driving.0 -
Gyms don't allow me to workout as hard as I would at home. I can't stand personal trainers because I would rather them be doing the workout with me than to instruct me about how to do it with words. You want me to run, you run too.
I'm more motivated at home. From 6am to 7am it is my time to wreck myself with a workout I know I'm pushing myself to do. I hate it and there are times where I don't want to do it but I love getting it done. Then I have the rest of the day to get stuff clean or whatever the case is.0 -

I actually feel more embarrassed at home, and have to fight to not stop if I hear someone nearby who might see me working out. At the gym, everyone's there to sweat and get all gross, and it's just strangers so who cares? But idk I feel so WATCHED when my parents come by and go "what are you doing" and I'm stretching in the den.
Plus, if I'm already at the gym, I might as well do all the things I want to do (unless it's super busy). It's like, I'm already here, why not? Though I do sometimes overdo it (like now...hello ice packs...). At home, it's like "I could be watching tv right now...or eating popcorn...or literally anything else that isn't so awkward....0 -
I kind of like the gym more. You can get more motivation. Seeing others using the same machines or even dancing/zumba can make you push harder. Want to do better
Working out at home has its benefits too. We have a elliptical and a few weights. Can listen to music, do yoga, zumba, or whatever else.

I don't have access to a gym so no choice. I think I would make excuses not to go to a gym anyway. At home there are no excuses for me to just do my workout.
Do what works best for you.0 -

I love that comparison. Too many distractions at home. I mix it up though....sometimes only have a limited amount of time and don't want to waste it driving to the gym. However, the bigger burn/better workout is achieved somewhere other than home.

I also do better at gym. I get distracted too easily at home and want to get domestic things done. Plus my gym is small and very social. We do the WODs together, people chat before and after, people notice if you're missing. I'm competitive so get extra oomph out of working with others - I like to be good at stuff, I don't want to let my partner down if we're doing a partner WOD and like to keep pace with others.
I practice yoga at home at least once a week but DH often distracts me because he doesn't appreciate that I get in the zone. He'll wander past and start talking to me - kind of kills the vibe a little...0 -
I do better at the gym because I do better in group classes.
Working out at home by myself I just find boring... No people to motivate me.0 -

This.
I have access to a small gym at work that I use occasionally, but my lunch breaks are too unpredictable to make it a regular thing. Plus, my co-workers think nothing of coming down there to ask me questions, and that gets really annoying. I'm up by 4 a.m. most days, so I just work out in my basement--I can wear what I want, listen to what I want, I don't have to share my equipment, and no one comes down there except my dog. I don't have a lot of stuff right now, just some adjustable dumbbells, a bike & a 100 lb. heavy bag, but it gets the job done until I can get a bar & a bench.

It can get monotonous for sure, I've had to stick to my home gym since my 6 yr old is off for the summer (they dont allow kids over the age of 5 at the gym on the base). And though I've been making the best of the home gym, i miss the adult time with the other ladies there, small talk. Or the hey cool exercise, show me please. Lol. I think its both good and blah, but its a total benefit around the busy gym times of the year, or when there's little time to work in 20 minutes. New year resolutions, summer time, bring all your kids to the kid gym day (for me), these times are when i love my gym.0

I much prefer the gym. I like the bustle- I like the noise- I like not being at my house. All these things I like. I have cats- and piles of TO DO's- so it's just easier to leave and forget it's there then try to deal with it.0

Do you have a clear workout plan? Or ever try doing things for time or reps? Sometimes ticking off reps against a clock works for me when I'm not 100% up for it. (It's safer with lower or non-weighted movements though.)
Like I use Simple Workout Log, which you can set to take you through a routine. Has a timer built into the log for every exercise, which you can use as above OR to force yourself to slow down or hold certain movements for a given amount of time (when you feel like rushing).0
