Friends/coworkers

I have been changing my diet and choosing better food options and it seems like my friends/coworkers aren't supportive at all. They always want to go out to eat (like Mexican or pizza) but when I tell them Im trying not to eat that stuff they always get upset or stop talking to me. They always talk about how they need to change their eating habits and lose weight but whenever I try to put in my two cents about how they should bring their lunch they get upset. Does anyone else have this kind of issue?

I have declined two team lunch outings--One to the casino buffet and one to a calorie bomb bar/restaurant. I let them know I was watching my calories, and no one gave me any problems. I wouldn't dream of telling them what they should eat though. I'd tell them all about CICO and MFP, but never what they should do.0

It can be very difficult when friends don't understand what you're trying to do. 'One dinner out isn't going to hurt'...oh yes it can. For me I need to keep my momentum going! I've had to decline going lots of places with my friends, or just going and ordering a small salad (or a big one) or something else that will fit into my calorie goal. I find that sometimes not mentioning that you're watching your calories and just saying 'this is what i feel like eating' can help, depending on the people. Good luck, it's a battle.0

I have learned not to expect others to change for me, and to also never give advice unless I am very specifically asked for it. "No thanks, I brought lunch today" or "Nah, I don't feel like that" is all you need to say. If you want to hang with them at lunch, try saying "how about you get yours takeaway and we can sit in the park!" Having said that, there is also nothing wrong with fitting some mexican or pizza into your day.0

Consider going with them and ordering something that your eating plan can handle, like a salad, or 1 piece of pizza, etc. Sometimes that can be harder than not going, depending on who you're with, but it "is" possible.0

Yeah, I experienced that too, so I decided that I will not suggest anything anymore. Some people is just too sensitive and get offended easily these days. The best thing you can do is just go out and try to eat healthy, you can eat fish tacos at the Mexican place and just one or two slices of pizza. As long as you feel happy with your lifestyle your friends/coworkers should respect that. If they don't, then you are better off without them.0

Thanks for all the advice! The only thing that bothers me is they always complain about their weight and I just want to say do something about it! But I know people don't like to hear that some times.0

Just let them complain about their weight, they'll figure it out if they are really serious. Half of my co-workers are over weight and complain like yours, then the other half are all fairly fit/thin looking but do crash/fad diets twice a year. I just continue on. They still invite me to lunch but I definitely do not go most of the time. We also get free donuts/chocolate caramels/brownies/lunch/sonic drinks (example of exactly what we got just yesterday), all the time and I just say no thanks!! It's hard though, lol.0

could you find a healthy place to eat and invite them there? Or over to your place for healthy food?0

That's a little extreme to stop talking to you. They obviously have their own issues. It's rare for me to go out to lunch because when I got serious with my nutrition I told myself if it didn't come with me in my 6pack bag I wasn't eating it. Now I am more relaxed but when coworkers suggest a place if it's something that has zero menu options for me I will just suggest some place else and they are understanding because they know I have goals. As far as friends and coworkers complaining that they are not happy with how they look or wanting to lose weight. I just let them vent and let them know when they are ready I'm there for them.0
