Anyone else taking boxing lessons on here?

Just wondering if anyone else has started taking boxing lessons on here? I just started about a month ago and totally love it! Learning a lot and getting in great shape at the same time. Just wanted to see if anyone else on here is doing something similar and what your experience has been.

I do kickboxing - I love it. We're hitting a heavy bag and not other people but it is a great workout.0

I do a boxing class but I wouldn't say it's boxing as a 'lesson'.
We work in pairs and we do a circuit type class with punching and pad work involved. I have seen a big difference in the look in my arms and chest. The muscles are coming because I also do a 5X5 lifting programme but my muscles are also 'leaner' since I started the boxing iykwim. Perhaps the fat loss?0 -
That's cool. Glad you're enjoying your classes! I just started my classes about a month ago and love it! I look forward to it all week! The funny part is I've known the guy for about 5 years now, I've been doing his taxes for years on the side. He got back into training people on the side for extra money and to enjoy the sport again and I asked him about taking some classes with him last time we met for his taxes. He said sure why not, so I started going in mid July and it's been great.
We train either in his basement (has a heavy bag, speed bag, double end bag, slip rope, gloves and wraps, etc) or at his buddy's boxing gym just a few minutes away. I've been exposed to this whole different world of people and stuff, really neat.
I have a desk job, doing tax accounting, so boxing is a pretty far stretch from what I do at work on a daily basis. Most people I work with golf or have boats, etc. I on the other hand enjoy muscle cars and now boxing haha!
I've already lost 8 lbs but I can tell I'm much more fit than I have been in the past when I lost weight. My clothes are fitting better and looser sooner than before. Last time I lost weight it took about 15 lbs before my clothes started to noticeably fit better. Now at just 8lbs of weight loss my clothes fit better. I feel stronger and have more energy too.
I got my own pair of gloves from Ringside a few days ago as well as some hand wraps. I want to get a heavy bag for the basement off of Craigslist at some point too. I tied a rope in the basement for a slip rope to practice that too. I wish I would have found out about all this stuff years ago, it's so much fun! Better late than never!0 -
I take a boxing class twice a week. It incorporates kickboxing. I wouldn't consider it a lesson necessarily but we do bag work and last week we each had to get in the ring with the instructor. Talk about anxiety. I do my best not to get hit! Lol. But I do think it's a great cardio and upper body workout. Mental for me as well.0

That sounds like fun! At this point I'm just doing it for a more fun way to lose weight, but maybe if I get better I'll see if I can get in the ring to spar with someone. The boxing gym we go to sometimes has two different rings, it's fun stepping inside one of those even if you're just by yourself. Hitting the bag is fun, but even just shadow boxing seems to burn a lot of calories and makes me sweat pretty good. I can feel a lot of muscles in my shoulders, back, and arms the next day that I never felt before which is cool. Makes things more fun than just running on a treadmill and counting calories.0

Boxing is a sport I have always wanted to take up, but went into traditional Okinawan martial arts instead - now doing more MMA. I used to work out with an amateur boxer to increase my stamina and amazed at all the subtleties involved in it.0

I got the opportunity and decided to take my buddy up on it, he's a great trainer, you should see some of the kids that he trains that are only 15 years old, they could probably beat me to a pulp, they're so fast and strong. There's a lot more to it than it looks. Lots of footwork details, timing, coordination, etc. I dont know if I'll even attempt to go as far as sparring with people, but it's fun to learn everything and I'm losing weight and getting fit so that's cool.0

That's cool! I wish I had gotten into this stuff years ago, just never had any exposure to it in the past. It's a lot of fun, a whole different approach to getting in shape compared to the usual lifting weights and cardio stuff I used to do.0

I tried boxing training at the local boxing gym and loved it. It's much more fun than going to a gym with the usual machines.0

I agree, much more fun than the usual stuff. Way more involved and it engages your mind too since you're trying to learn something.0

I'm a kickboxer primarily, but I got the opportunity to do some one on one lessons with an olympic boxing coach last year and it was fantastic.0

I'm a boxing fanatic but I have never had a chance to train in the actual sport. This thread is definitely tempting me to look into it.0

Took boxing lessons in the federal law enforcement academy and besides the major boost in cardiovascular endurance there was one major thing I took away from it. Cliffhangers. Most people do standard pull ups or widespread ones but not many people do or know of cliffhangers. It targeted all the muscles need for a great hook or uppercut. If you haven't done them before or don't know what I'm talking about give them a try and see what you think. I love them and love boxing it's part of my regular workouts. Glad someone else does too.0

Not boxing but I started Krav Maga a couple of weeks ago and it's alot of bag/pad work. I thought my cardio was pretty high but man hitting those bags for 2 minute intervals like that gets me sucking wind fast! I was astounded by how much of a workout it was.
Side note.. I was only wearing MMA gloves when I first started and now my knuckles are pretty torn up. Recently invested in hand wraps to go underneath them. Being a boxer is there any other tricks you know of to keep me from tearing up my hands?0 -
It's definitely worth looking into, it's a lot of fun! You might be able to find someone in your area that just trains on the side like I did. Much less intimidating than walking into a full out boxing gym as a total newbie. But I would think most gyms would be accomodating to you as well if you're eager to learn.
Never heard of cliffhangers (only the Sylvester Stallone movie from the 90's haha!), I"ll have to check them out. My back muscles are pretty weak right now though, I can barely do one regular pull up. I can do a lot of push ups and dips, but pull ups I suck at. I'll have to work on that and over time maybe work my way up to some cliffhangers.
I agree, even just shadowboxing is tiring if you get really into it. Running on a treadmill or jogging at a certain pace for a while is tough, but hitting bags/shadowboxing is even tougher to me. The 3 minute rounds sound short but they aren't!
I would suggest you get some good boxing gloves if your hands are getting beat up. I've been going for about a month now and my hands are still fine. Be sure to get some 180" hand wraps (cotton slightly elastic) and then get some good gloves (i.e. Ringside). I got some Ringside IMF Tech sparring gloves 18oz to use for now, but you could get some bag gloves that are 14oz or 16oz as well. The IMF (injection molded foam) holds its padding qualities much longer than standard gloves to protect your hands longer. If you wrap your hands properly (I wrap my knuckles around 8 times) and wear good gloves you should have no issues with your hands hurting.0
