Does anyone else think it's just wrong to have advertising from McDonalds scrolling across the screen while you're logging your food for the day? What could be less motivational than that? I understand the need for advertising on a free website, but shouldn't they be selective? Or is it just me?

Your advertisements are based on links you've followed and search terms you've googled. That's how internet advertising works.0

Some people here can fit a Big Mac or even two into their calories for the day. Don't fall into the trap if thinking that everyone here uses the site with the same goals as you.0

Ab-Block. No ads. Ever.0

I love these threads.0

All the ads are based on your cookies and search history. Someone in your household has been searching McD's. Better than the guy that was complaining about getting porn ads. He was blaming MFP! lol0

online advertisements are based on search history as well as other demographic information...MFP doesn't put the ads up.
I just got done booking a hotel for a concert I'm going to...it was a Homewood Suites...I'm currently looking at a La Quinta Inns and Suites advert.0 -
Uh, no. I've never googled McDonalds. I posted this because I think it's ironic, that's all. I realize we are not all pursuing the same goals. I feel like I should apologize for asking the question. Thanks for your support.0

Get Adblock plus, it's free and reputable and works. I don't get any ads here on my PC.
I do get ads in the app, though, but usually the stupid "you have 1 new message" banner ad, that apparently is malware if user complaints about it are valid. If it is malware, I think that's wrong that MFP hasn't done anything about it to remove it.

You may not have googled McDonald's but you may have read an article about it or a thread about it. You also may have looked at a website of something that is vaguely related to McDonald's. For example, you could have looked up nutrition info on a fast food website so now you are getting fast food ads. Here's a page that describes Google's Adsense: https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/9713?hl=en0 -
I lookup things for my 5-year-old niece all the time and now I'm getting ads here for "Disney's Frozen on Ice."
I also get the occasional ad for at-home paternity tests.
Goggle has a hard time figuring me out.

It doesn't have to be something you searched directly. it could have been something mentioned on one of the threads here, or something somewhat related to it. It could also be from something from weeks ago or something anyone using your computer searched.0

No apologies. Not everyone understands how these ads work. It is ironic. I find it even more crazy that because I recently bought tickets to Disneyland that I keep getting ads for Disneyland. I'm already going! I don't need more convincing. Really.0 -

Yeah, now that I've clicked on this thread, I'm probably going to get some McD's advertising.0 -

I've learned a lot from your question by the informative answers. Thanks for asking it. I forget how targeted the ads can be.

Not necessarily. I see ads for Solar Power, Health Plans, Big Size Women fashion, window blinds and more. I already have solar, I don't need or ever looked for new Health Plans, and didn't google blinds, and I am a petite 2/4 size. And this is my personal PC.

Read the rest of the thread.
ETA: You can't see how visiting a site like MFP might make advertisements for a health plan or Big Size Women fashions appear?0
