hi everyone so I really need some help. this summer has been really hard for me speaking in terms of weight loss. I was very healthy right before summer started, and I was very happy with my body and almost finished the entire insanity workout. however, I started eating unhealthily again and got off the workout. then throughout two weeks in July I was undereating extremely unhealthily. I lost almost 13 pounds. however, i started eating so badly these last few weeks. I gained all of the weight back and am back to the weight I started at before any of this. I just started swim practice today and we practice three hours in the morning and two at night. how can I lose weight healthily, build muscle, and not starve myself so that I can still do well at practice?

You are 20 years old, 5'8", and need to lose eight pounds? You're not going to get much sympathy from here.

Set your goal to half a pound a week. Eat that number plus half your exercise calories. Don't qualify foods as "good" or "bad"...eat more nutritious foods first and foremost, then work treats in within your calories/macros. You won't be able to build much muscle in a calorie deficit, but once you reach goal weight you can move on to body recomposition.

Sounds about perfect to me. I'm 5"8 and 140lbs is my cut off weight.

Ouch. Try to be more sympathetic to first-world problems.

OP - discipline, moderation, and strength training. For the latter, pick a good program - Stronglifts, NROLFW, or a personal trainer's plan. Post an update in 6 months. :+1:

OP is apparently a competitive swimmer, so yeah, those 8 pounds are important.

You swim... A LOT! I'm guessing competitively.

Summer gets weird but as long as you are still on the swim team your body should level out pretty quick now that you are back at it. I'd eat at maintenance cals if I were you. After two weeks if you don't see the scale starting to go back to normal slowly, or your body starting to feel back to its regular fat to muscle status, check back here for suggestions of links to get a more fine tuned handle on your cal goals.

You can't build muscle eating at a deficit. Eat at maintenance calories, not a deficit. Check out the MFP Maintenance forum and the body recomposition threads.

    Good luck!
