Is it true that you burn more calories in heat?

I heard somewhere that you burn more calories doing the same exercise in intense heat, is that true? BTW I'm posting a "before" pic so I can see my progress. My boyfriend says I'm very fat and should drop 30 pounds. As you can see I don't have abs.92f0anqkrjhd.jpg

    The body increases your heart rate the hotter your body becomes in order to lose excess heat through the blood around your skin. You'll find it's a lot harder to maintain the same level of activity if you're in a hotter than usual setting since your heart will be working double time to supply muscles with oxygen and cool down your core temperature.

    I'm not entirely sure if it is true... but I suppose your body has to work more to maintain a 'normal' body heat. However... the effect of this is going to be pretty minimal - it's not worth trying to sustain something like this for such little returns.

    OP... a caloric deficit (eating less than the amount of calories you need to maintain your weight) results in weight loss. No one bothers with trying to purposely be too hot or too cold... they just eat less.

    OP... if you don't want to lose weight, then you probably won't as the motivation isn't there. Remember that weight loss requires it. Every. Single. Day. That means accurate and perfect logging... honesty... willpower. It's not just a diet, it's a life style chance - most people who come to MFP lose the weight they want and then either maintain it successfully because they continue to use MFP or they purposefully gain weight (on a bulk; weightlifting, more calories etc).

    I heavily advise that you ask yourself "do I have the willpower and motivation to actually lose weight?".

    If the answer is yes... the forum is a book of knowledge.

    If the answer is no... then ignore what your boyfriend thinks... he should be looking past your physical attributes if he really loves you.

    You really don't need to lose 30 pounds and you are nowhere near "very fat". You could lose 10 pounds but you also may be at a healthy weight already. I'd focus on recomposition and getting leaner, not losing weight if you want to change. Or just maintain and ignore your boyfriend who has issues if he thinks you're "very fat".

    How much does your boyfriend weigh? You could drop however many pounds he is by kicking him to the curb.

    No. You may burn a tiny tiny few more calories in the cold. And, you do not need to lose weight. And, I don't know why you feel the need to add in every single post that your boyfriend called you fat, unless you want the confirmation from others that he is wrong. He's wrong. The most effective way to internalize this is to tell him so.

    I'm going to be taking Bikram yoga. My boyfriend broke up with me already, but unfortunately, that doesn't magically make me feel better about what he said about me (old, very fat, not working). The scars still stay with me. In fact he convinced me that he was better than me and that I was lucky that he was willing to tolerate me, so now I feel even worse about myself, that he didn't approve of me.


    Good. You can use this time by yourself to learn how to care less about other people's opinions and love yourself more. Looks like you weren't going to do that while leaning on him for your own sense of self worth

    You're 27, according to your profile. You're at a healthy weight, and you have a lovely feminine body. I don't know if this guy (or the other one) emotionally abused you to the point where you should feel "scars" or not, but I assure you, you were tolerating him, not the other way around. My best advice here is that you should stop posting about him and/or losing weight, and start posting about gaining muscle. For my part, I believe that gaining physical strength is a path to gaining mental strength as well. As I recall, you also have a therapist with whom you also should be speaking about this. It seems to me that what you have here is a bad breakup with a real a-hole, and, if you are willing to take the advice of a 49 year old, divorced and well-dated woman, then let me assure you that 1. it gets better, eventually, and 2. its a learning experience, whether you want it to be or not.

    My husband says that I'm always in heat. And that actually leads to us both burning more calories. :p

    Wow what a *kitten*.
    Anyway, I was asking myself the question about the temperature too and found a single, very old study where they heated up some dude's leg in a hot water bath then -somehow- measured his burn during a bout of exercise and compared to baseline and a cold bath. He did have higher metabolism but severely reduced endurance compared to baseline. Best results were gotten at 26 degrees Celsius.
    How useful that is, I have no idea, I doubt it's in any way significant. I could look the study up next time I'm at a PC.

    omg, your boyfriend has issues. there is no way you have to drop 30 pounds. I'm assuming he's some chippendale dancer? you look good and you don't have to have abs to look good. It's actually a true fact that you burn more calories in the winter because your body is fighting to reach it's normal body temp and stay warm. You may sweat more in heat but you will burn more in the winter. If you do say a 10 k run in the summer as opposed to winter, you'll burn about 100-150 calories more.
