It is 11:15p.m. and I have eaten all but 19 calories and I'm soooo hungry. Just curious what everyone else does when this happens. do you go to bed hungry? or do you get a snack?

I drink a glass of water and that seems to help. It's what I'm doing now0

i drink a big glass of water and hope that the hunger stays at bay until I can fall asleep... But my hunger is not genuine hunger normally. It's because I used to snack in bed before sleeping and my body craves sweet things when I go to bed.0

When this happens to me I usually have a 5 cal Jell-O with some tea. Or I have a serving of veg (like cucumber or celery). Surprisingly this seems to do the trick for me!0

I usually have a green tea. warm, soothing, filling and 0 calories0

i go to bed hungry0

Is this a one off thing? If so, eat something. Don't go to bed hungry. If it happens often you may want to reevaluate your diet and calorie target.0

i can't sleep hungry, so since it's after midnight, i'd count the cals toward the next day & if it is earlier, being 100 cals over every so often isn't going to ruin our goals )0

I try not to. But I wake up starved, lol0

Never, I have a casein protein shake right before bed.0

Water or a healthy snack fruit, jello, veggies etc... I know if I go to bed hungry I wake up in the middle of the night craving food and that usually gets me in trouble! Its funny how much your will power goes away when you are half asleep. At least it does for me :frown:0

I'll usually have a yogurt right before i go to bed as I can't fall asleep when I'm hungry.0

I keep lots of cold bottled water in the fridge and lots of chewing gum on hand. If I'm hungry and it's not time to eat, I go for one of those. Keeping your stomach full of water and your mouth full of gum is a pretty foolproof way of dealing with a voracious appetite.0

Yes, initially I have. I personally have made friends with "hunger" and have come to the conclusion that it is nothing but a spoiled child! I am so used to giving in___ It screams and I feed it.
Not necessary if I have eaten enough calories and gotten enough exercise, water and sleep. This was a huge ah-ha moment for me. ANyway now that I have learned to ignore hunger it doesn't pain me as much anymore.
side note: I am new to MFP and am looking to friend fellow life changers on their journey.0 -
No, I never go to bed hungry. I will eat some of my exercise calories at the end of the day. You will eventually get to know when you need to eat so that you don't fall into the "I am starving" phase and want to eat everything in sight. I eat a small meal OR snack about every 3 hours which works for me - and I stay within my caloric limits.0

I never go to bed hungry. I don't believe in it. And I go to bed around 2 - 3am almost every night. Exercise calories and excellently planned schedules of feeding seem to help. If ever there are times where I have a minimal amount of calories left, I'll suck it up and just go over for the day, then start brand new the next day with better planning.0

try a small snack and some Skim milk...0

I do. Most of the time i have managed to spread out my cals enough so i don't but then i also get woken in the night by my kids and i'm ravenous by the time i get back to bed it does make it so i take longer to get back to sleep but i live with it. Even when i was eating more i'd be in the same i've never eaten in the middle of the night. That's the one bad habit i never got into.0

I quite often do, especially if I had a big lunch so had to eat a smaller dinner to make up for it. I just go to bed thinking 'I can't wait for it to be morning so I can eat breakfast'. Hahaha.0

if youre genuinely hungry and its not just psychological craving, then eat something. just have a cereal bar or a yoghurt or something. Going 100 cals or 200 cals over your allowance occasionally will not make a difference, since MFP usually puts you at a 250 - 500 cal a day deficit anyway. The worst thing that will happen is it will be a maintenance day instead of a loss day, but if its genuine hunger, then probably not even that. If youre so hungry that you cant sleep, that is likely to be more of a hindrance to weightloss than having an extra snack0

I sleep poorly if I go to bed hungry, so I don't do it.
About half an hour before I go to sleep, I have fiber one cereal with nonfat milk and berries...usually blueberries. I have tried lots of other different things and this does the trick for me. I also eat a small snack between dinner and bedtime. I have these in my food plan, and I find that following this erases the evening munchies. Thought I would never conquer that temptation, but it works for me!
Good luck!

Generally speaking, I don't do hungry. If I'm hungry, I eat. But, I do distinguish between true hunger, the munchies, and simple desire to chew/taste something. True, physical hunger, doesn't like to be ignored and just finds other ways to get its needs met.
So, if I found myself truly hungry at 11 pm, I'd eat something. And if I'm actually hungry...a cucumber or some fruit isn't going to cut it. I have some cheese or some yogurt...something dense and filling. I find If I go to bed hungry, I'll just wake up in the middle of the night to eat. Or wake up ravenous...and maybe eat a little too much for breakfast because my eyes were bigger than my stomach.
And you're going for sustainable habits, not "diet habits." *You will keep the weight off in the exact same way that you lost it.* So ask yourself. Are you the sort of person who will go to bed hungry for the rest of your life to keep the weight off? Some people can and do. I will say, however, that many of us who have struggled with weight...will not. So whenever you get a question like this, ask yourself...is this a sustainable habit? Or a 'diet habit?' And the answer is personal...lots of people do things everyday that I don't think I could sustain...and vice versa.0 -
Have a slice of turkey. Protein will keep you full, its low fat and full of tryptophan which will help you sleep :-)0

Hi, I am fairly new to this and was being pretty strict and going hungry but was really not enjoying myself and I can see that I may not stick with it if this is what it will be like. I am going to try the green tea and gum ideas and if they don't cut it a yoghurt.0

Ditto! For me it's a comfort thing I think, all I need is something thing to put in my mouth - yoghurt, couple of nuts, a slice of meat whatever but I can't go to bed without eating something and I can't sleep either lol! Actually I have never thought about this before - it's just become my little ritual! x0 -
I'd recommend against it - when I have catch-up sleep, and so don't get up till mid day and wake up hungry, I just can't stop eating. I guess going to bed hungry would have similar results - butI usually have the opposite problem - it's 2am, I've just eaten 700 calories, and I've still got 400 to go....
Last night, I didn't eat everything I should have, but I *will* eat extra today to make up for it.0 -
Have a couple of slices of deli turkey breast, about 50 cals and keeps hunger at bay! Stay away from carbs before bed though0

You know a key factor that everyone forgets about wt loss is adequate sleep, if this doesn't happen your metabolism gets screwed up, so eat something so you can get a good nights sleep.:yawn:0 -
I am quite often starting to feel hungry when i go to bed, i usually have a glass of water. I do really appreciate my breakfast the next mornign though!! If i was in your situation i might have a low cal hot chocolate, options hot chocs are only 36 cals, as a warm drink can help you feel fuller.
I have heard conflicting things about chewing gum... maybe someone can clarify. I heard it makes you hungrier as you are chewing and creating saliva, which makes your stomach think its going to get food, but then it doesnt, so you end up hungrier than before....0 -
I often go to bed hungry as it tends to feel like to much effort and if I'm really tired my bed is more of a priority0
