Does exercise make you energetic or sleepy?

Hello everyone,
Just want to know before I visit my doctor. I'm often tired during the day (especially in the mornings) which I'm not liking. I workout first thing in the morning. I can't workout in the afternoon/evenings as simply can't get into the exercise. If I don't do it first thing, I won't do it at all.
So, my question is, it is the workout making me tired? After my workout, I have a shower then go to work where I am not bounding up dem stairs or skipping around the building as I'm too tired :) Surely I should have more energy? No? Thanks.

How's your diet? Mineral balance? Calories? Carbs for energy? Iron?

I find exercise definitely makes me tired - I've never done a work out then felt energised afterwards, I usually want nothing more than to collapse in bed.

Though I don't find the feeling usually lasts, after I've rested for a while I'm fine. If I exercise in the morning before work I feel completely fine after having a shower.

I also feel tired during the day (I'm constantly worried I'm going to get fired or something for falling asleep in meetings...), I've gone through various exercise routines and levels of general day to day activity and found that none of them affected how tired I felt while at work.

for me, it depends upon the exercise. a long jog (over an hour) or an hour of swimming will leave me starting to feel sleepy about 2 hours after. If its weight training or boxing, then im buzzing for hours after and will often have trouble getting to sleep if I have exercised late.

The visit to your doctor is timely. Get some lab work done, especially iron level and thyroid function.

I'm usually collapsing in bed after a workout. I used to do some morning workouts, but those classes got shifted. I was indeed able to go to work after those. In those cases it just took some time to be able to function normally without being tired after those workouts.

As for exercise making one more energetic, I don't necessarily think that always happens right after the workout for everyone. Exercise, overall just makes you fitter, makes day to day tasks a bit easier because you're probably used to exerting yourself even more during your sessions. Regular exercise also makes you.... better at exercise LOL. Just increased endurance in general

For you OP, since mornings are what work for you currently, maybe consider adjusting the intensity or duration of your workouts? Or hang in there to allow your body catch up a bit. Mean while, caffeine should help. I'd be curious to see what your doc says - good luck!

Until my base level of fitness increased, I mostly got tired from intense exercise.

Once I acclimated, however, it definitely became energizing.

I've never understood this mysterious energy rush people supposedly get from working out...it always makes me even more tired than I usually am! BUT the silver lining is that it helps me sleep better!
  • try having a high protein source either before or after your workout.

When I began, it made me very, very tired. After a week or two, I had more energy.

Now, if my day doesn't begin with a swim to loosen me up and get me energized, I'll feel off all day. Not sleepy or sick, just not as good as normal.

It depends on what type of exercise I've done, sometimes I'm tired other times I feel very energetic.....

Thanks everybody. I'm currently doing Insanity - started Month 2 today (not my first time of doing Insanity though - I simply love it). I'll see my Doc but from what others say on here, it doesn't seem to be unusual :)

I work out at lunch. When I used to work out in the mornings, my energy was through the roof, until about 3PM, where I hit a wall and want to crawl into bed. I sleep better at night no matter what time I work out. I just wish I could get back into the AM workouts. It seems to be a crap shoot if your energy is higher or lower after the workouts.

My guess is that it typically means you're not eating properly (not eating enough or not getting enough nutrients in your diet).

It depends on the workout. I feel energized right after a workout, but I also find that lengthy workouts make me want to take a nap after I cool down.

I used to feel wiped out after swimming to the end of the pond and back (one mile) but I have built up enough stamina that yesterday I was able to swim the mile, then take off my flippers and swim another 1/4 mile, and not feel exhausted afterwards. However, I did sleep for a solid nine hours last night.

You said this wasn't your first time doing Insanity but have you been doing it long enough to build up the stamina you need for it to not make you tired? How do you feel after other sorts of exercise?

I'm tired. but I always am tired even before this journey started.
I get all jazzed up before but a little later. :sleepy:

I'm not tired/exhausted the rest of the day. I wouldn't say I feel like I am supercharged. I feel normal after a short recovery period.

I would look at making sure you are getting enough calories. Are you eating any of the calories earned from exercise?

Funny u should ask! I am doing C25K and after a run this morning and then walk into town and back, I required a power nap in my bed with the electric blanket on. I try not to do it in the day but definitely makes me tired - I mainly run right now, but also cycle and walk but I need my rest LOL!

Same for me, I feel awesome!

Apart from swimming, that makes me sleepy for some reason lol.

Exercise gives me energy. If I am feeling tired or sluggish, it's likely because I am not getting enough movement.

Tired afterwards. If you've worked out hard, you should be tired. I'm especially tired after swimming.

Swimming is more tiring for some reason. ...
I don't agree though with tiredness=hard workout in general...Maybe to begin with but not when you're used to it...

I am alert, awake and totally energised. I love the energy rush I get from my workouts. I am definitely tired on rest days so I don't take many anymore.

Exercise makes me sleepy. Always has. By the end of an aerobics class I'm yawning big time.

I have been noticing that I am really tired on days that I exercise in the mornings, I get a great adrenalin rush after and then i am flat. I have just had all my bloods done and they are normal.... so i think its just quite normal.

I find it depends on the workout. If I'm running 4 miles and including some weights, then yes, I'm tired. But if I just do a 2 mile run with some squats, jumping jacks, etc. then I find I'm fine through out the day and will have some energy. I also include a protein shake that's about 100 calories that I find helps me.
