Spinning

Hiya,
I'm thinking of trying 'spinning'.
Does anyone know if a normal exercise bike will be sufficient, or should I invest in one made for 'spinning'?

    You should do this in the gym. you need a specialised bike for spinning. Good luck it's a FAB workout!! but i think it would be safer in class environment. x

    You need the special bike. I suppose you could fake it on a regular one, but it isnt the same. Also, having an instructor lead/push and select music is great.

    I agree that to do spinning, you would need a spinning bike. However do not underestimate what a great workout you can have with your regular bike if you truly push yourself to a resistance that you find challenging. It will have similar effects to spinning. Work on your bike to a fast beat of music and try to go with the tune.

    Spin bikes are very different from a normal stationary bike. It's best that you take a few classes at a gym to see if you like it before you commit to buying your own bike. There's a lot to learn about how to properly set yourself up on a bike to avoid back and neck pain - good posture is essential. A spin instructor will take you through bike set up before a class if you arrive 15 minutes beforehand and introduce yourself. You'll also learn how to spin to the beat while challenging yourself during spin, terrain, chase and hill climb tracks. I spin four times a week at my gym including a 2 hour back to back session and I love it. I started out using it as cross training for rowing but now it's a core part of my weekly work-out plan. You do hit plateaus in spin like any cardio and it's good to mix it up with other cardio and weights. Spin is a lot of fun and a great workout and I'd really recommend it. I love it so much that I've been asked to train to be a spin instructor at our gym.

    A class full of people and an instructor will provede you with lots of motivation, and hopefully you will enjoy and stick with it.
    It is a great exercise: you will burn lots of calories, it has less impact on your body than running, so it is easier to be consistent with your training.

    A bike at home soon becomes very dull and not something to look forward to do, unless you have a training routine and specific goals.

    Many cyclist find it hard to train on a turbo alone at home ( frame-stand that allowes regular bike to be fitted and provide resistance against back wheel to train indoors) and resourse to gather in groups (so similar to spinning) or watching training video and escape outdoors as soon as possible. They are already higly motivated... but it is dull work!

    Also in many cases a spinning class is held in a gym and you can incorporate your weight trainig or other stuff, (and shower there( in one visit to save you time!

    I find it hard to get to the gym, so I've bought a proper bike, and a child seat for the back - I cycled my daughter to nursery yesterday - and loved it!!!

    I should be able to fit cycling in a little better - especially with the child seat on it to!
