Heavy Lifting Question

I recently started heavy lifting (on my 3rd week) and have noticed an increase in edema in my legs and my abdomen is very swollen. Is this nirmal? I have been warned that I will gain weight, but the swelling has been a surprise. I have had all sorts of tests done for my edema in the legs, Echo, ultrasound , bloodwork, chest x-ray, etc., everything is in the normal range. Just wondering if anyone has experienced abdominal swelling or if I should call the doctor again. Thanks!

That's not common. What medication do you take?

That's not normal. Hopefully it's nothing serious, but... Call your doctor.

call your doctor …and you should only gain weight from heavy lifting if you are eating in a caloric surplus.

Not normal. I assume the edema is in your lower leg/ankles? That could be a lot of things associated with diet and exercise change. Since they didn't find a red flag, probably just from the stress on your legs. Do you take blood pressure medication?
Since you said swelling amd not bloating of the abdomen, it sounds like you feel it's more than a change in digestion or something. See your doctor. Is the swelling general or in a certain area/side? Is it painful?

Swelling and some additional water retention inside the tissue is normal, while the body is repairing.

Edema is water retention in the interstitium, and is not normally a result of exercise.

If you cant determine which you have, or are unsure, I would recommend you get medial diagnosis and confirmation, to assuage your concerns.

Thank you for the replies. I will call the doctor for further tests. I do not take any medicine. Just a water pill, prescribed by the doctor, a probiotic and B complex vitamin.

A "water pill" is a diuretic (reduces fluid in the body) and IS medication. People don't take a diuretic as a matter of course. Apparently, you do have a condition that causes edema and you should have a chat with your doc about it. Find out your diagnosis, the real name of the medication, and have her/him explain both thoroughly.
