Achilles' tendon?

Hi,

So I just started couch to 5k after hardly any exercise my whole life. During the second half of the second session my right ankle began to ache right above my heel bone then after only a few minutes it was really painful when putting it on the ground (worse when running but still hurting while walking) then my left ankle followed shortly after. That was about 12 hours ago but I'm still in pain and can't walk without it hurting unless I walk on my toes and it has swelled slightly.

I've googled the symptoms and only came across Achilles tendinitis but that seems to come on more gradual. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be and if it needs to be checked out?

    If it's painful to walk and has started swelling, then yes it needs to be checked out. Better to have it checked, and it just turn out to be some modification of your running or maybe your shoes.

    In the meantime, ice it.

    Tendinitis can happen abruptly. And when it does, it's usually chronic (meaning it never goes away, but can be more painful or uncomfortable at some times than others). Since you incurred it during a new exercise program, it's probably minor right now. Make sure you have good shoes and RICE for now.

    I suffer from this, get some ibuprofen gel on it and some ice. And get it checked out by a professional. Good luck!

    word of warning - I came down with this early last year and took painkillers and did what I thought was best which was rest it. when 4 months down the line I was still struggling terribly I went to the doctors and then to physio - physio said I had done the wrong thing in resting and that I should have been doing stretches which she showed me (you can google these too) - the doing nothing had put me back months!!!

    definitely look up these stretches and rest in far as don't do anything that is "pounding" on your ankle for a while but please do something as it took me months to get back to running/working out to anything like what I used to do.

    mine I think was because for the first time I did not go and get fitted with running shoes - I just went to the sports shop and brought some so I think they didn't fit great and I really upped what I was doing to do a lot of steep inclines.

    im back to working out again but still get discomfort when running around the 5-6 mile mark or doing a lot of high impact so it is something I have to be aware of always now.

    I would go to a orthopedic. When my achilles was in a lot of pain, it was because I had plantars fascititis. Apparently, those with flat and/or narrow feet tend to have this issue. Due to this, I had to upgrade my shoe to a stability shoe (I use brooks GTS 15's) and I don't even run. I mostly do HIIT. I also had to do therapy for several months and while its better now, i still have some issues.

    I don't have flat or narrow feet either.
    It is very frustrating not being able to Run though, as that's my main form of Cardio exercise.

    Mine was dull for a few months, which should have been the indicator that I should have gotten it checked out. But the time it was sharp, it took longer and needed more attention.

    I also forgot to mention, my ortho mentioned it is also typical with those with very high arches. So apparently, if your arch isn't the perfect angle, you are screwed, ha.

    Stop running if it hurts while you run. You're done! Stop or it will get worse.

    I had some really bad issues with my left and I still do but it's manageable with some stretches and ice/hot bath treatments. If you tore your tendon you need to go in asap. You only have about 3 days to get it fixed or you won't have a good outcome. Most likely you just have tendinitis but you can try the Thompson's test at home if you're unsure.
