Life is dangerous.
Wild animals... mostly they would rather avoid humans. Make some noise when you are out walking and you won't see much of anything. I have been hiking at my in-laws cabin in the Allegheny mountains where the neighbor who lives there year round has said he has seen as many as 6 black bears in our camp some mornings. Yet in an entire weekend of camping have yet to see a bear. Plenty of scat. No bears. Kind of a bummer really.
You can't go through life being to afraid of the world to go out your front door. It sounds like you live in a pretty wonderful place to be outdoors. There is less and less of the world where wild things still have a place. And those places are usually incredibly beautiful. How sad to never be able to experience it out of fear of something that will probably never happen.
What good is a long life if you never do anything with it?

This is not a sane reason to condone it, but if I were to be killed by a bear, car or treadmill...
I think I might pick the bear.
Not that I want any of those, and frankly the bear might be the least pleasant way to go.
But if I could, I would be thrilled to say I was killed by a bear while running in the woods as opposed to being hit by a car, or falling from a treadmill and hitting my head.
In fact, if I ever do go running in bear country, I think I will do it naked with my hair on fire just to add to the story.
Aw, heck, who am I kidding? I would have done it naked even without the bear! Except maybe the hair on fire part.0 -
@whatmerunning no matter how you die we'll drag your body to the woods and tell a great story of your bare bear death. Cause. well. that's what friends do for each other.0

I don't think @WhatMeRunning should be tempting us with these ideas @skippygirlsmom. ;-)0

Where do you live? I want to live there. Sounds like a dream to me!
Pacific Northwest. They're everywhere. I have probably a dozen bear encounters a year - and I only live an hour from a major city.
I live in town in durango Colorado and have a bear living in the trees next door. Taking out the trash is always an adventure at night.

its their owners im scared of up here in sheffield.
sign says dogs should be on leads at all times but folks let thier dogs roam free and many choose to run with me at least for a little while
the owners get angry and ive been told several times i should be walking if theres dogs around, sooooo i should on run 100 yards of my 2 mile run then?
i used to be terrified of dogs as i was bitten on 3 occasions as a child but thankfully none of the dogs i meet at the park or the lake have been aggressive

Bear spray!!!!!!!!!!!! Black bears are pretty timid too, unless they have cubs or are quite large 300+lbs range. I personally wouldn't be afraid; go buy 2 cans of bears spray and use one as your test can to see how it works (make sure you're pointing it downwind and have nothing downwind you value). Bear spray is like pepper spray on streiods, having it is safer than having a gun.0
