Mine made a big difference in moving more once I stopped treating it merely as a tracker.

FYI, MFP has a Jawbone UP Bracelet group: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/13420-jawbone-up-bracelet

    It's pretty quiet, though.

How did you do that? I have one and it is helping me increase my steps slowly, but I'm not sure how to go about using the information.

Get some UP teammates and start doing duels—they're great motivation.

I set my goal to something I could hit 3x a week. Once I hit it 5x a week, I increase it.

UP insights & challenges help me up my game (pun intended). "Today I Will" take 500 more steps and log another workout.
