3,500 calories are in a pound so you would have to create a 3,500 calorie deficit.

Assuming it is a pound of fat, 3500 is the answer. A pound of muscle has a lot fewer calories (700 I think), but you will lose some muscle as well as fat when dieting unless you work hard to prevent that and eat enough protein. This is tied to the size of your calorie deficit and how much fat you have to lose. Some of the old studies made the incorrect assumption that all the weight lost would be fat, but that is not typical of real world conditions unfortunately.

To lose 1 pound your would need to shed roughly 3500 calories BUT there is NO way to determine how many calories are in a pound.unless you know whats the pound contains...example..a pound of lettuce has less calories than a pound of chocolate......

There are 3,500 calories in a pound. In order to lose OR gain one pound, you must either subtract or add 3,500 calories from your diet.
After you input your information, MFP calculates how many calories you should have each week to maintain your current weight, then subtracts 3,500 calories from that number (losing 1 pound a week), then divides up the remaining calories, telling you how many you can have a day.
If you exercise, you burn calories that MFP has said you need. Therefore, you are allotted more calories for the day when you input your exercise. Even eating back the exercise calories, you'll still lose weight.

1 pound of body fat is 3500 calories. One pound of muscle is 600 calories. 1 pound of Water is 0 calories. Unfortunately, we gain and lose a mixture of the three so it is hard to do the math when you are over or under your calorie needs as to what you will gain or lose.
