Food Guilt?

Does anyone else have awful food guilt? I am way too strict on myself. I had pizza for dinner the other night after a really good day of healthy eating. An hour later I was crying and hating myself for "ruining my day”.
Today I had an ice cream cone because I had a tiny, crappy lunch and I have plenty of cals left (plus I'm working out later). I still feel like I screwed up. :(
I KNOW I'll feel guilty before eating these things, but I do it anyway... Then get hit with the overwhelming guilt as expected. I need to figure out how to control this because this is supposed to be a lifestyle change, not a diet. I don't want to live my life scared to eat anything but salads and wraps. It's... Depressing.
Do you experience this? Any suggestions?

Once upon a time I did. About an hour ago I posted that I spent 366 lunch calories on 15oz of wine...so I don't have those feelings so much now, no.

You will get over that guilt. It is understandable. It's all a part of learning how to navigate regular food. Promise.

What is awful or unhealthy about pizza? It's tomato sauce and cheese and bread, not arsenic and crack.

If you are seriously crying and hating yourself (rather than exaggerating for effect) you need to see a counselor. It's not healthy to think that way.

    Best of luck to you.

Nothing wrong with a treat at the end of the day if you've hit your micros and it fits your macros...

You didn't ruin your day until you cried! You were eating in a normal healthy way, you don't want to go your whole life not eating pizza or ice cream. If it fits in, enjoy it :)

I do this but I'm usually outside of my calorie limit...I am very petite though and to lose those last 5-10 pounds I need to be quite restrictive or I don't lose. I am also one of those people who doesn't do moderation well. One serving turns into the whole container on certain things like tortilla chips and ice cream.

I think if its within your goals you shouldn't feel guilty! Its a treat and if you can do moderation-you are awesome in my book!

you shouldn't be having feelings of guilt over food...this is what happens when you apply some kind of moral value to something like food...

I've done this before. I would even feel guilty for just thinking about "unhealthy" foods. If I remember correctly it was while I was on anti-depressants. Since I started running (and got off the meds) I've been in a good mindset and I haven't felt this way. Also, I've learned that small treats here and there keep me from craving/binging.

There are no screw ups and there are no good or bad days. A day just "is."

Food either fits into your calorie plan or it does not.
Somedays we go over calories. When that happens we keep logging and start again the next day.

I eat the same food I always did just appropriate portions.
Eat the way you plan to eat the rest of your life.
Food is food. Some food has more nutrients for the amount of calories. Don't label food as healthy or unhealthy. Sometimes you are going to eat food with lower nutrients because it tastes good.
Reflect on your food choices. Did it leave you hungry at the end of the day to eat pizza or ice cream? Did you have diarrhea or any physical ailment following the consumption of the food? Did you steal the food from a mother of 5 hungry children? Did a puppy die because you ate pizza? If you were basically okay and you didn't steal from or maim anyone then there isn't a reason to feel bad about eating it.
If you didn't like how you physically felt eating so many calories of pizza or ice cream then eat smaller portions in future or choose a different food to use your calories on. I eat smaller portions of pizza by pairing it with a salad.
    Log it. Move on.

just remember food is neither good nor bad. it is.
    it is fuel
mind you, some is more nutritionally relevant than others but a meal of pizza is not going to hurt in the long run

I would suggest you to pre-log your meals the day before. Maybe allow yourself a treat everyday (or whenever you want). Just be sure that you already know what you are going to eat, so you have no reasons to feel "guilty". And there is no such a thing as bad food, so enjoy whatever you like, as long as it fits your daily calories.

Nope. No food is good or bad, it's just all food.

If I have calories left, and I have reasonably met my protien and fat macros, then I will have something good and gooey and enjoy the heck out of it!

You should check out my log. I had over 400 calories in truffles yesterday. I just had a 12oz New York strip for lunch (and it was glorious). Sometimes I wind up logging about 400 calories in whiskey. Twice this week I've had two separate lunches, one when I got hungry at 11:00, and then another when my dad invited me to lunch at around 1-2PM. I could fit it in, so I went.

I can't do a "diet." I eat within my calorie range, and I LOVE each and every bite. Food isn't good or bad. You need food, and it's generally healthier for you if you enjoy that food.

Nope. Although, I might feel pretty dumb sometimes when I spend most of my calories on breakfast. Today I can't even workout to get more (I have bronchitis) so I'm just either going to be hungry or eat at maintenance. It's not a big deal. I think the media tends to drill it into peoples heads that they can't eat this or that and if they do they are bad for doing so.

Woah, nothing wrong with pizza. Pre-log your days to include these things, but more importantly, let go of the idea that there is "bad" foods.

No more crying over eating ...Please? :]
Your day isn't ruined. Your success hasn't disappeared. You've not gone off track - you are absolutely FINE!

Moderation is key. Make sure you allow yourself a bit of every thing you enjoy (logged, if you can)! If you go over your calories one day, wipe the slate clean and use those fresh set of calories the following day for better choices. The only thing you are guilty of is having a bad relationship with food. You've got this, stay strong. I promise you'll get there!

**THIS*** is why you got such a good response to your post this morning. Things like this.

Do yourself a favor, and when you have a moment of doubt like you did this morning...take a second to re-read things like this that you chose to spend your time to write to someone else. :)

You shouldn't feel guilty about eating any food unless you stole it.

If the pizza or ice cream fit into your calories for the day, you didn't even screw up. Pizza and ice cream have vitamins and minerals and macros your body can use.

Try to get out of the mentality of good food and bad food. It is not something to link emotions to.
I always think how lucky we are that we are able to truly enjoy the things our body needs for fuel!

I eat ice cream and/or chocolate almost every day. It's all good. Keep your chin up, take care of yourself, and let yourself enjoy food! :drinker:

I struggle with this too! I get a little sad feeling after eating treats at least half the time, even when I can fit them in and I feel like I've "earned" them :/

Not sure how to combat this, I'm hoping I'll relax over time and when I see changes happening anyway :) I think it reminds me of old habits, and makes me afraid I'm on the verge of going back to them, because I'm so new to this. If the mentality hasn't changed in a year or so, and I've made progress, then I would think something's wrong.

Healthy eating does not include guilt and tears. I hope you exaggerated for effect!

Do you prelog? Planning may help you visualize the impact of different foods on your calories and macro budget and thus lower the feeling of anxiety.

I don't worry about it. I think stressing too much will cause you to give up, so no black and white rules for me.

Pizza is fine every once in a while, life is boring without it.

The one thing that helped me cut out my trigger foods is knowing the urge was not going away just because i eat it. The fact that i would want it again and again was enough for me to realize that it would be a downward sprial. I do try to incorporate all foods but when i feel guilt i tell myself to snap out of it and i remember how far ive come.

I really think your relationship with food needs to be evaluated by a therapist, there is nothing healthy about that kind of guilt.

Your profile also shows a problematic attitude to food.

    About Me:
I live with my boyfriend in IL with our 3 dogs, cat, and corn snake. We have always had an extremely unhealthy diet. We eat a lot of fast food, sweets, and drink a lot of soda. I happen to have a very very sensitive tummy. I have irritable bowel syndrome which requires a very specific diet as treatment. I have also realized over the last few months that I am lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, and extremely sensitive to sweets and caffeine. (Duh) So... my diet will be free of all those things.

Why I want to get in shape
I have IBS as well as food allergies that I've discovered over the last year. I get extremely sick every day from the various, unhealthy (and healthy) things I eat. That needs to change. I miss out on fun times with my boyfriend and friends because "I'm too sick today". I miss work shifts a lot because I'm sick and I'm sure they are frustrated with me. This should have changed a long time ago.

You say you "discovered" these allergies... a doctor or specialist didn't diagnose them?

    :/

Food shouldn't make you feel ashamed.

Try to remind yourself that you DO want to eat the pizza and ice cream. That's why you eat it. It isn't really that you don't want it, but have no control over yourself. You're 100% in control. When you eat this stuff, remind yourself that you've chosen to eat it.

Once you're accustomed to choosing and knowing you're in charge of what you eat, it might get easier to chose not to eat things that will stall your diet or not contribute to your overall health. But, IMO, there is no way to choose anything so long as you tell yourself that you cannot help it.

    Good luck.
