Hi all. I wanted a bit of advice. Back in 2012 I was dieting following the UK slimming world plan. I attended weekly meetings. I reached target in early 2013 with a 3.5st loss. I stopped going to class as I hated them, and the weight just crept back on as I lost motivation.

I want to lose the weight again and get fit and healthy. I have tried following the same slimming world plan again, but I just can't get motivated. I have tried to following it as class but I despise the meetings. Any tips for getting that motivation and doing it alone, is it possible to lose weight yourself without weekly meetings?

Why do you need weekly meetings if you hate them? I would not do them either.

Plug in your numbers into MFP and go from there.

    And welcome to MFP!!

I thought it was the only way I could stay accountable by attending. But if I can get the motivation and willpower myself hopefully I'll be ok. Thanks!

I think the problem with these diet plans is they have a very unsustainable approach. I'm no expert on slimming world but I have heard you can only eating certain food groups on certain days and you can't mix carbs with meat etc etc? To me, that is an insane way to go about it! I don't doubt for one second that it helps you lose weight if their is a deficit involved but I don't understand the benefit of doing it that way, IMO! It certainly doesn't sound like the sort of thing you'd keep up for life!

My suggestion would be to stick with MFP! You really can (and are encouraged!) to eat a little of every thing you love. No 'just carbs on tuesdays' or anything even remotely similar. Just eat at your calorie deficit, move more if you can and you WILL lose weight. No woman with a clipboard recording 'how well you've done' each week and no unsustainable restrictions. Once you see how straightforward the process is, your motivation will follow. You can and will do this! Good luck :]

After you would leave the meetings, you were doing it on your own anyway -- so you already know you can do it! :) I think you could get the same thing using MFP. Logging your food and having friends on here keeps you accountable. I used to go to meetings that I hated too. It never works, lol.

Thanks guys. I do know the plan off back of my head but guess like you say it's quite restrictive. You can mix carbs and meat but there is no portion control. I'll give it a go on my own without the meetings. Really want to do it just need o get focussed and in the zone. Got a goal for holiday next May. Just feel a bit guilty stopping going on the lady who runs the group. X

In the end you hold yourself accountable. You have to find it in yourself to want to lose weight, be healthy, etc. It's not going to be the fad diet, it's not going to be the meetings. Your goals are personal, and that's okay! You have to remember why you want to lose weight and stick to that. Look up awesome recipes. Plug in your numbers to MFP and go. :)

I'm sure your 'Leader' will find someone else to help pay her wages ;)

I hated WW meetings - had to do it online and had no trouble. No trouble with MFP either. You can do it because you aren't alone :)

I have enough rules about eating healthy and low-fat. I don't need more rules just to be on a special diet. I also don't want to pay anyone to lose weight when I can do it myself for free. So, I didn't join those kind of groups. I do think that meeting others who are losing might be really helpful, though...assuming they're serious.

I can't really tell you how you should do it because everyone does it a little differently.

I eat normal amounts of healthy food, exercise daily and I try to get enough sleep. The sleep thing - my peri menopausal body doesn't always allow for it, lol, but I try! Maybe that would work for you, but maybe it wouldn't. I don't know.

Try things you think you might like. Find what works for you, :)

Try NOT dieting and make a lifestyle change instead. Learn moderation and how to be conscientious when making food choices, thus something sustainable.

I understand your aversion to meetings. I've been on Weight Watchers a couple of times...the first time was way back before there was an online program. Didn't get much out of the meetings at all.....even with a leader that was engaging and knowledgeable! The second time around, I joined the online program, which worked just fine, but the website started having so many problems, and I got tired of paying for tools that I couldn't use, so here I am.

I agree that motivation has to come from within. It comes and goes, even for people who have been at goal for a long time. I think determination is more important. When you want to be fit more than you want that extra large serving of whatever, it will all fall into place.

    Good luck!
