Greetings friends!
Here is my story (but first, a little background): I am a six foot three inch broad shouldered male. I'm a big dude. In 2013, I weighed 320 lbs. and lost 70 lbs. which put me at 250. In 2014, I gained it all back. Beginning in August of this year, I started eating right again and am down to 290. However, I am plateauing and even gaining weight. MyfitnessPal has me at 2070 calories, a goal to which I adhere, or even fall short of each day. I exercise nearly daily. I spend most of my time on a stationary bike and sometimes I run, generally for 45 minutes per day. I have seen this weight gain now for two weeks. When I lost weight before, I never had a time like this. So I am wondering what advice, if any, y'all have. Thank you!

How much weight have you gained?0

Gaining how much? Two weeks isn't very long.
I've seen gains that long when I was eating at what I knew was a deficit. Eventually, the weight started coming off again.0 -
What are you eating? What are your macros?
You could be eating way to many carbs and fats.
Try switching to an 'Intermittent Fasting' diet.
And ditch the lets spend hours on a treadmill attitude. Try some HIIT workouts. High Intensity Interval Training.
You said you can run for 45 minutes, so you'll have no problem doing a HIIT workout.0 -
I was down to 285 and am back to 290. It's a battle every day, it seems. Overall, 5 pounds.0

Carbohydrates and fats shouldn't cause a weight gain if OP is in a deficit though.0 -
How much weight have you gained in the last 2 weeks? How often do you weigh? 2 weeks isn't really long enough to worry too much, it's perfectly normal to stay the same or gain a small amount for a week or two, especially if you're weighing weekly rather than daily.
But it's also worth asking how accurate your calorie counting is. Do you weigh everything, or use cups/estimate portions? If you don't weigh your food it's a good idea to start doing so, as it can be easy to go over your goal otherwise. Also, do you eat back your exercise calories? If you do, how do you calculate them? Gym machines and the MFP database are notorious for overestimating exercise calories, so if you're using them and eating all your calories back, you could be eating back more than you're burning. Many people eat back 50-80% of their exercise calories to make up for this.
Ultimately I'd say to just keep going for now since it's only been 2 weeks, but tightening up your logging can never hurt!0 -
I do everything I can to measure and estimate my portions. I lack, however, a kitchen measure to actually weigh my food. I am working on obtaining one. I don't eat ANY of my calories back. I set my calorie goal based on a "sedentary" lifestyle, workout, and take my workout as an extra. I weigh myself every morning. I am glad to know that periods like this are relatively normal! I will continue to do what I am doing and update this post later. What would be an amount of time gaining weight when one should be alarmed?0

I'm a bit larger than you, but I've had a three-week period during which my weight went up even though I was absolutely in a deficit. I doubt that's the outer limit.0

Definitely try to get some kitchen scales. You can get them online or I'm sure there must be a shop near you that sells them.
Normally a plateau is said to be 5-6 weeks or more, though that's if you're staying the same, if you're gaining you probably want to act quicker. Personally I'd get some scales asap, you may find that overestimating your portions was your problem.0 -

My stats are pretty similar. 6'3", I'm at about 264 lbs right now. I've been losing 2 lbs a week pretty steady at ~1800 calories a day. I use a scale to weigh all solids that I eat (aside from eating out). I don't usually eat back all of my exercise calories, and I usually knock some off the machine's estimate before logging (350->300).
Daily weight for me can easily fluctuate by 5 or more pounds, depending on what I eat. Lots of carbs, sodium, or alcohol make me retain quite a bit of water weight. For me, it usually drops off after a day or two, but everyone is different.
Try to get a scale (mine was about $12 at Target), and start measuring that way. I find using a scale makes the process so much easier. I lost a lot of weight before with out ever touching a scale (more than 100 lbs). It's very doable, but it's less precise, and easier to accidentally eat at maintenance.0 -
You gain weight because you are eating at a surplus. Simplez. Its not sime imexplained mystery its because you are eating your way to a weight gain.
If you dont have a scale , then get one but in the meantime just track your weight and adjust how much you eat according to whether you lose weight over 2 weeks.
Oh and if you are a yo yo dieter then start thinking about your strategy to keep it off once you have lost it.0 -
