potatoes weighed less when baked

When logging in potatoes do you weigh the amount before you bake them or after? Sorry if this is a dumb question haha but I just got a food scale, and I was previously just using a cup measure. But I weighed the whole potato wedges first to get an idea of the portion size as I was making them for two, and after I baked them I went to weigh out my portion and I was able, according to the scale, to have way more than I thought. I mean, obviously they shrink and what not during the cooking process so that's why I am wondering should I weigh my portion after they have been baked to get the proper gram measurement to log?

I would go with raw weight and make sure my diary entry matches. The calories should be the same, but the calorie per gram is higher after cooking. If you do weigh it cooked, make sure the diary entry is for cooked, not raw. I go back and forth depending on my mood, but as long as the diary matches, you should be okay.

Weigh raw if possible if you want better accuracy. However, weighing cooked isn't the end of the world, just pick the correct database entry.

Always raw when possible. Cooked when not. I just use the appropriate entry.

When it's possible, I used the cooked entry. I log what I eat. Were I to eat it raw, I'd log that.

Often, it isn't possible because foods get mixed together and cannot be weighed independently when they've finished cooking. If that's go I to happen, I will weigh and log it as raw.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure you pick the right entry. Raw for raw and cooked for cooked. :)

Yeah but calories don't magically disappear because the food is cooked... and cooked weight will always vary depending on how long things are cooked for.

I'm not suggesting that you change. I don't care how you log your food.

My dietitian advised using cooked amounts when possible. I also like to keep a good watch on my micros and those change depending on how the food is prepared. So, I do what was advised for me and what works for me. This works very well for me.

I wholehearted believe that you should do what works best for you and would never suggest that you do what I do.

    ^^This.

Also, take raw chicken breasts for instance. The serving size is measured as raw. Even though you lose size/weight after its cooked. Not fair but, if you want to be most accurate, raw is the way to go.
