What is the point/purpose of My Meals?

Hi all,
I'm new here, I've tried MFP before but have up as I found it difficult to use. No longer want to pay for site I have been using so I'm back here again and trying to learn how to make best use of MFP. My question is what is the point of my meals, I assumed once saved I could click on the relevant meal and add it to today's food diary. That not being the case what is the purpose of this feature? Thanks in advance.

After you have saved a meal, when you go to the "food" section to log, you have the option of going to the "Meals" tab. The meal that you have previously added should show up there and you can add it to your current day's log.

    That is the case.

That is exactly how it works.

If you're on the website, you would go to your diary, select Add Food for the breakfast / lunch / etc as appropriate, click on the meals tab, check mark the meal you want to add, select the serving size, and then 'Add checked'.

My Meals is a place to collect a few individual ingredients you usually eat together so that you can quickly add those ingredients to another Food Diary Meal slot. Take for example a typical side salad of iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, carrots, sweet green (Bell) pepper, celery, etc. Log each item (by weight preferably) individually, then choose to save "Side Salad Fixings" as a My Meal. When you add "Side Salad Fixings" for the next time, you can then adjust the individual weights of each item, even zeroing out those you didn't use, depending on how much you actually use.

Edited: Oops, missed the part about how to add it. Follow what @blankiefinder said.

Assuming you're saving the meals correctly, yes--that's how it works. To save a meal, (on the computer) you would click "Quick Tools" under a particular collection of foods in a given food diary slot and hit "Remember Meal". Then, you can save it under whatever name you like, and use the same collection of foods repeatedly. I use it for stuff like homemade pizza or burgers, which have a bunch of different items to add (beef, bread, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, etc.) so it isn't a pain.

Thank you for all the replies, that makes complete sense and was how I imagined it was supposed to work. I cannot find the check mark or how to mark it anywhere though which is why it appeared to be a useless feature to me. Can anyone please enlighten me? Thank you.

I've tried both and can't find the check button on either. Roughly where is it situated? TY.

I'm not on my computer or I'd post a screen shot, but via the website it is to the left of the meal name, following my directions above

On the Web version, you have to be in the FOOD > Food Diary > Add Food page, then click the MEALS tab to see a list with check boxes, which allows you to add a saved My Meals to one of your Food Diary's Meal slots.

You can only delete (not edit) a saved My Meals item from the FOOD > My Meals page, so you will not see check boxes on that page to add an item to your Diary. To edit a saved My Meals item, you have to add that My Meal to your Food Diary, then make changes, then choose Quick Tools > Remember Meal and then choose "Or, Replace An Existing Meal" to save it with the same name to overwrite the My Meal.

I used it once. In 2.5 years, lol. I made some chicken cordon bleu and only entered the ingredients for one piece, and entered it as a meal with how much it weighed in the title... so when I got another piece, I just used that entry and changed the quantity to match the weight of my new piece. Seemed kinda easier at the time than weighing everything and do a recipe.

Otherwise I never use the same quantity of stuff when I make a single serving recipe and you can't edit it so it's pretty much pointless.

I use it all the time for my breakfast. I don't have to use the same amount each time, once I enter the meal and my food diary I can go in and edit the quantity of each individually ingredient if needed. Though since I pour my breakfast on food scale I do try to use the same amount every day

Actually another meal I use with this is turkey dinner. Since a lot of the things I eat with it I don't eat off enough to stay on my frequent list

I like it for constructed meals, like tacos, fajitas and the like where there are a lot of ingredients, but the amounts will change from meal to meal, or I might leave something off one time etc. It's also good when only my first 2 tacos have shells, then I just eat more of the filling, because it means I don't have to tweak a recipe.
