As someone who lives in Hawaii. Kona Ironman is no joke. This year the conditions were actually really good for the athletes. Most years the waves are big and the headwind is strong and hot. When the wind blows across the hot lava at you coming back from Hawi it's like a furnace. I'm not saying you can't do it, but 30m ins training per day just isn't going to cut it. It might be okay for a the first few months, but as you get into the 6-9 months til race you'll need to be into the 15-25 hours per week training time, otherwise you'll regret it. Just saying.

Except this doesn't really have much to do with the OP - who isn't doing Kona and isn't racing - he just wants to finish. I agree that is going to be difficult, gruelling and that 30 min isn't what I'd suggest but lets also keep it real.

This is basically the 'run-walk da marathon' of an Ironman. Anything but easy. Or a great time.

Well, having volunteered at a few and seeing how people suffer at these... I look forward to being proven wrong. But I think this is folly.

Which race did you sign up for?

^Curious too about which race this is for.

If it's so easy then what's stopping you from doing it next Saturday? Why pay the 900 to do it at an ironman, just do the distance on your own.

Best of luck man. Seems like an ill advised plan to. I want to do an ironman too but it's not anything I would consider easy.

Mental toughness is a solid thing to have at times, but without the physical abilities it won't improve pace, condition your muscles, or get you carb loaded quick when you hit a wall. If I was limited on time and determined to go for it, I'd keep at least 5-6 months in hand to train hard and not worry about the weight loss part. Too much time worrying about the weight loss is going to be time that muscle is still being lost.

    osacker, you ARE an Ironman!

Well you could always buy one of those Ironman tags rather than actually complete one
