Doctor suggested diet

Needing a new primary physician and went to one that has been recommended as a great general practitioner and good with weight loss as well.

Has suggested that I lose 70 lbs and suggested the following diet:

3 eggs every morning
100 calories at lunch (anything)
600 carb load at night (no/very little protein)

This sounds crazy to me, different than everything else you read nowadays. But just wondering your thoughts on this. Basically he said you lose most weight at night, and that by carb loading, no protein, you would burn through that fast and then work on what you had during the day (that's the gist of it anyway!) Not to mention that it is 900 calories...who wouldn't lose on that, right?

Thoughts?

I would question whether his medical degree was obtained via online distance learning from the university of Quackerton.

Sounds horrible... Why so few calories?? That doesn't seem healthy or sustainable.

    This^

Unless you are looking to schedule some type of surgery in the not too distance future.....there is no reason to eat this low. Plus without some sort of "help"......vitamin injections (maybe) it would be awfully difficult to get all your nutrients in 900 calories.

Sounds crazy to me, too. But really, doctors are pretty good at tell us why we need to lose the weight, but menu planning obviously isn't his forte! lol

No surgeries, only health condition is a hypothyroid. I know I can't stick to that long term. But you hate going against the so-called expert!!

What does the group here suggest? Follow the calorie recommendations here on MFP?

My DH's cardiologist told him he needed to exercise to get rid of belly fat. That's all. No mention of watching his calorie intake.

    smh

MFP is a simple calorie counting system, and you can eat whatever you like, really, within the calorie goals. What's advised on this forum is not necessarily the same as the MFP program. This is a member forum, so you will read a variety of opinions.

I would think that a well-balanced diet makes sense, regardless of medical conditions. I can't picture a condition where that wouldn't be sensible. But heck, I'm not a doctor.

Hey, at least he saved you the trouble of realizing what a quack he is with just a basic consult, not when you have some horribly contagious communicable disease that he wants to treat with leeches...

But HEY if his experiment worked on you, he could write a best-seller. I think your instincts are dead-on.

The director of my weight loss program goes with what is tested and true (properly designed studies, published, peer-reviewed). http://www.drsharma.ca/ I see in his latest blog that he wants to see more training on obesity in the medical schools. That might prevent dreadful advice as shown above.

That doesn't even sound possible to hit the minimum amount of protein your body needs to survive. Sure, you'll lose weight, as muscle is catabolized like crazy to salvage amino acids.

Agree that I would never again visit a doctor that gave that advice.
