This is going to vary by individual. Where is someone starting? What are their goals?0

Depends on their starting weight, age, history, etc.0

Depends on TDEE, BF%, goal weight, start weight, etc.
But a general rule of thumb would be as follows, assuming your goal weight is in the "healthy" BMI range, and athlete levels of BF% http://www.builtlean.com/2010/08/03/ideal-body-fat-percentage-chart/
If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal, and
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal.
There are a couple reasons:
1. too large of a deficit can lead to a larger % of weight loss coming from lean muscle
2. It sets you up for maintenance by lowering your deficit over time0 -
1% loss of body weight per week max0
