Please just do what the medical professional suggested and follow up with them timely. I'm sure most of us on mfp have had constipation due to our changing diets, and all have something that has worked for us. This is now past home remedies. Please keep us updated as we care about you and your discomfort. Best wishes.

Try a dose of milk of magnesia with warm prune juice, heat the juice and mix in the MOM then drink 16oz water afterward. If that doesn't help and you still don't go to the ER, maybe try a fleets enema. It sounds like you may have a hard stool "plug" as such that needs help from the bottom end. If that doesn't help you definitely need to go to the ER. Waiting too long can cause portions of the colon to die and you could end up with a bowel resection and colostomy or worse. Unfortunately, I have seen several cases where this happened to younger, healthy people. They were just "too busy" to worry about THAT and well.. they got to deal with those side effects for the rest of their life.

She has been to the ER ... several times. And now the situation sounds really serious. I sincerely hope it's not.

But we're long past "milk of magnesia with warm prune juice" now.

Natural calm, start with half a teaspoon in the morning and half before bed. Add flax oil to your diet as well. If you google flax oil for constipation, they have charts that show how to work your way up. If you rely on the medical industry, they will just mask symptoms and never attack the root cause. I was told I would be on medication for the rest of my life for gastritis/acid reflux. After 5 years on it, I found natural methods and researched the root cause and got myself away from that. That was 3 1/2 years ago. Wish you the best

Yes. Given everything, ignore all the home remedy suggestions you're getting. Especially the ones with stimulant laxatives (like smooth move tea). Good luck OP!

I'm kind of surprised that they said your intestines aren't working at all and then told you to go home and not eat.

What does the paperwork say? Did you get a diagnosis or diagnoses and what were the printed instructions for them?

My guess is that she isn't producing the bacteria necessary, to process the feces into passable sizes; hence the blockage. The worst case scenario is that, she'll require a callosity bag; to remove waste.

I had to go back to the er. This morning after 3 hours of being home. I woke up and my rightarm and right leg were numb with pins and needles. I was laying on my left side at the time. So i rolled over on my back and it spread to my left foot, within a minute my left arm was numb, 3 mins later my nose and mouth went numb. I was in the hospital all day....they said they dont know what could cause it, i have to see a neurologist after the weekend, because they cant diagnose diseases like m.s. or other things in the e.r....that statement scared the crap out of me. So im home not eating, have some pain meds and valium....

    that is scary.. **hugs**
let us know how you are doing.

laxatives, prune juice, more fiber and that thick liquid cooking crap my uncle had me tried never did much for me..
i accidently found something that worked fastttt though, a fruit sugar called 'xylitol', when i first bought it, i brainlessly put 50g in my coffee and hmmm everything was cleaned out of me by end of day....since i changed my diet, i don't get constipated like i was for years anymore but, whenever i start noticing i am heading there, i add 20g of this natural fruit sugar to my coffee the next day and it has kept the constipation from returning.. if you are like me and don't have a medical reason for your problem, try this xylitol for fast relief.

Large amounts of xylitol will work for many people, however I just want to clarify that while there are very small amounts of xylitol naturally occurring in fruit, it is NOT a sugar at all. It is a sugar alcohol which is an entirely different thing...not sugar and not alcohol. The xylitol you buy is not even made from fruit, it is made from hard wood or corn cobs. I like it, btw. Tastes great!

went back and looked on site and you're right, one i get is made from non-gmo corn! i missed the fine print.
description mentioned fruits & vegetables and the fruit stuck in my brain so i have been calling it a fruit sugar..
kinda funny how corn sugar does not sound as appetizing to me right now

Saturated fat is important to help with bowl movements. So make sure you get some every day. Banana can bung you up to so perhaps cut back on them. And magnesium helps

Honestly at this point, people are just responding to the first post and ignoring everything else. Kind of annoying and definitely not helpful to OP.

    Ileus was the diagnosis

Are you feeling any better? Have you been able to see a specialist yet?

Okay, the numbness is better, my legs are still going numb if i sit for more than 15 mins. The edema in my legs and hands is pretty terrible. Like just holding my phone with one hand causes deep lines in my pinkie...( i would post a pic if i knew how) My sister in law had a 31 party today @4 and i ate some pretzels, thinking since I was able to pass some gas finally that my bowels are moving again. It was a big mistake, my stomach swelled up again, and I am now laying in my bed in some pain and nausea. I am trying to be positive, and hoping that the numbness is caused by the edema and nothing neurological. They put so much fluids in me during those 2 trips to the e.r, after not being able to drink much water or any food that i gained 10 lbs....so yesterday I made myself drink 84oz of water trying to get my body to release this extra water. I was feeling pretty good til the pretzels....but i hadnt ate all day.

I really am so grateful for all of your well wishes and thoughts and prayers. I have never had something like this happen, and you all make me realize the world and especially MFP is full of some pretty amazing people :)

I can't believe that they just released you from the hospital, without your bowels clear; this can cause lethal toxicity. I would've refused to leave the hospital, contacted the media even; if they had me removed by force.

I read your "story" and can totally relate, but eating fast food is your issue ... cut that crap out & you WILL have the body you never had!!! It's full of chemicals, preservatives, hidden sugars & all around bad things! Find your outside perimeter of the grocery store & eat the fresh fruits/veggies & meats. You will see a difference...start small & grow with it....you'll be just fine!

I disagree I grew up on fast food, not by choice however & I didn't suffer with fecal blockage.

Eat an apple every day. Try hot water with lemon juice. Persisting in a medical consult also highly recommended.

This isn't really making a whole lot of sense. Hospitals don't discharge people who have bowels that aren't functioning at all; they admit them. They investigate and treat.

Either you've misunderstood something or they're exceedingly negligent. Since I cannot believe anyone outside of a third world country could be that negligent, I have to assume you've misunderstood something.

I'm not slamming you. It's very easy for smart people to misunderstand stuff. So very easy, especially if nobody bothers to explain it well. Emergency rooms being busy places, they might've had to rush through the explanations, which is why the paperwork comes in handy.

I suggest that you call your regular doctor and go over what they told you and what the paperwork says. Ask him what you should do now.
