Oh noo! 3556mg Sodium!?!

I'm so disheartened. I made turkey chili today for dinner and to my horror each serving is 3556mg of sodium. Is this right? I used Recipes and added each ingredient manually and I weighted EVERYTHING.

2 lbs ground turkey
2 30oz cans dark red kidney beans drained
2 cans petite diced tomatoes undrained
1 chopped yellow onion
1 can tomato paste
2 cups water

It all came to weight 3357 mg. I portioned out my bowl and that was 390 grams so I divided that and it came to 8.5 servings, so I rounded down to 8 servings. I'm super new at all this. Please be gentle. I don't normally scrutinize my cooking, but that sodium is freaking me out. Help please.

Did you check the sodium listed on the labels against the ones you used in the recipe builder?
I've had the same thing happen where one of the ingredients had a crazy amount of sodium listed incorrectly.

S&W, Hunts, and Eden Organics have low sodium canned beans and tomatoes. That is what I use in all my cooking. You can add extra chili and cumin for extra chili flavor without the added salt. I don't use tomato paste in my chili so I don't know how much sodium, is in the can. I also think that turkey ground may be higher in sodium than beef. I don't like turkey chili so I use beef.
Make the portion smaller (200 grams instead of 390 grams), and add a salad to your meal, so you will eat less sodium/meal. Just a thought.

Unless you have a medical reason to restrict sodium, it's not going to be harmful to you. Even for people with hypertension, it's debatable whether sodium restriction produces meaningful changes. About the only group of people that should actually really worry are those with kidney disorders.

Thank you for the responses. I'm confused by the high sodium because I added up the sodium mg from each ingredient and divided it by the number of servings and I got 680mg. Someone please help me understand how one serving of homemade turkey chili (no added salt) could be equivalent to the amount of sodium in fast food. Could Recipes have made a mistake?

    Turkey: 720mg soldium
    2 Canned tomatoes: 2520mg sodium
1 can tomato paste: 100mg sodium
    2 30z cans kidney beans 2080mg sodium
    1 onion 6mg sodium
    total: 5426mg

Alrighty so apparently Recipes is glitchy and can at times be very incorrect. I deleted my recipe and then manually entered all of the ingredients again, and this time it worked. 780mg sodium makes way more sense than 3557mg per serving.

Just an FYI to all who read this :)

That's part of the preserving process ... lots of salt. Often quite a bit of sugar too. Canned goods can be sneaky that way. :)
