So I've been doing really well in regards to having a balanced healthy diet with the occasional treats at the weekend. I've not struggled with cravings for such a long time but this week I have felt hungry more than usual and really craving carbs! Not sweets and chocolate but bread etc I wonder if it's because I've increased my running and my body is needing it? I usually get my carbs from fruit etc but i just really feel like I need a load of bread to satisfy my hunger!

Because our body ruins on carbs . Natural bread wont make you fat (whole grain, low sodium, vegan) . It is the butter and eggs in it that makes you fat actually. So don't blame the carbs.0

Halloween week.....all bodies crave carbs on this week. Seriously, if butter and eggs are making people fat than I am doing something terribly wrong.0

LOL at the italics. There is no "natural bread" it's all artificial ie man made. Nothing individually makes you fat if your total intake is small enough. I lost >40 lbs eating butter and eggs and no bread, go figure.0 -

Please don't listen to this. It isn't correct by any means. The only thing that makes you fat is too many calories... regardless of the source.
I eat breads daily (love me some sammiches). I tend to use Arnolds bread products as they are fairly high in fiber and protein (5g each per slice IIRC).
I have found when I incorporate foods I love, I reduce cravings. So it find a way to fit bread into your diet.

OP - how many carbs per day are you eating on average? If you are craving them, I am guessing that you are somehow restricting them?0

It's getting colder
Periods or ovulation
You've been cutting carbs too much
You just like em
Any number of reasons
Just make them fit in your calories
I lost over 50lbs easily hitting my protein goals with around 2-300g carbs per day out of choice..cos those were the foods I fancied ...I probably have lowered my total carbs since my fat days ...but that's because I've lowered my calories

This. Unless you have a psychological / adherence problem centered around certain foods, then the best way to beat cravings is to allow yourself the things you crave in moderation. In the long run, it would also help you to learn moderation skills around favourite foods for your life after weightloss.
The ohter possible issue is that you may have restricted your calorie intake too low - running a too large deficit, going too fast too soon - and your body craves foods you associate with satiety (for many people that's carbs). So I would check your deficit level and macros (tweaking the amount of carbs, protein and fat definitely helps me find a sweet spot of satietyy, and I have seen many on here say the same thing).

You're a baker? I love you. I love all bakers. You guys have the hands of god.0 -
Just eat some carbs. Eat some bread, rice, potatoes or whatever it is that rocks your world. Life is too short to feel badly about eating some good quality bread. Just be sure to log it and make it fit within your goals.0

Are you premenstrual? I used to crave carbs before my period but have since realized that I'm just hungrier at my TOM. I switch to maintenance calories for a few days and just eat more regular food.
Or yes, if you are burning a lot more via exercise, you'll need to eat more.0 -
When I started running I would be ravenous the next day, and carbs did the trick. The challenge is reining in that craving to reasonable levels. My fifteen minute run this week netted me 180 extra calories that day. Big whoop.0

Carbs are like gasoline for the body. It needs the sugars in carbs to function. I'm not talking added sugars, sweets or table sugars here. I'm talking sugars that do not taste sweet found in simple carbs like white bread. If you are craving these types of breads its basically the same thing (to the body) as sweets and chocolate. Try eating whole grain breads that are high fiber to feel fuller longer while satisfying the body's need for carbs.0

It really depends on you. Some that occur to me:
-- Yes, it totally could be a reaction of your body to the new fitness regime, that you need more carbs.
-- You could have something hormonal going on (PMS, pregnancy, etc.) that is triggering a carb craving.
-- Perhaps you're craving something else in the bread -- a specific vitamin or mineral -- and that's what your body is trying to get, not the carbs specifically. The carbs are just byproduct of that need to get something else.
-- Perhaps there is something psychological going on driving the craving -- certain time of year, certain event, etc. that you associate with that type of food.
-- Or you're having something difficult emotionally going on (depression, anxiety, etc.) that has affected your neurotransmitters and certain foods trigger release of certain brain chemicals more so than others and so you crave them for that reason. There's a reason people will joke about eating a carton of ice cream after a break up or some other sad event to console themselves. There are real biological reactions behind these issues.
There really are a lot of different reasons why we crave things from time to time. Some are good reasons, some aren't so good and can be destructive or self-defeating. I don't think anyone sets out to be 50+ lbs overweight, but they find themselves there for a variety of reasons.
What the reason is for you? Only you can figure that out.0 -

I notice on days when I run for my exercise I feel the same way- Give me all the bread!
Eat the bread if it fits, make it fit, have the bread, bread is not bad, don't let anyone tell you differently.0 -

Your body doesn't run on carbs or sugar.. it runs on glucose. And while carbs can be a source of glucose, your body does have the ability to make glucose as well through gluconeogenesis.0 -

I had to read that a couple times. You are saying overthinking these things are not that good for you, aren't you?0 -
@lostpolarbear your exercise may be calling for more sugar/glucose.
While carbs are not required for top human health (protein and fats are not optional) most of us love the short term feeling they give us.
The body can make its glucose requirements from protein is why carbs are not required for humans to work and perform their best. @psulemon mentioned the science behind this human ability.
The body/brain can run on glucose mainly from carbs or on ketone bodies that we get when the liver uses fats for fuel. You can Google all of that.
Dr. Peter Attia was the doctor that taught me the most when I first got into eating low carb to manage my pain.

IMO, a healthy and balanced diet would include carbs. The very foundation of my diet (noun) consists of things like legumes, lentils, potatoes, oats, whole grain breads, brown rice, pasta, veg, and fruit...all carbs. Beyond that, lots of lean sourced protein and healthy fats...it's a healthy and balanced diet.
There are only three macro-nutrients...carbs, fat, and protein...a balanced diet would include elements of all three.
if you're running a lot and failing to fuel that activity properly, that's also an issue.0 -
