so what does everyone think? I wore my hrm to the grocery store tonight for the heck of it. It says I burned 326 calories. Should I log these ???

I wouldn't. Those things are what I consider to be part of my daily activity of living...and they already account for those calories for you based on the activity level you entered upon starting.

I vote no. By doing so you're just fooling yourself into thinking you can eat more...
  • It is a choice you can make. I myself try to avoid counting the cals burned in the things I do daily ..those things done once a week like shopping I might count. The thing is not everyone burns the same amount doing the same activities. I burned more walking the store sixty lbs ago then I do now. So do what makes you feel better and keep on moving. I tried a thing the other day. I wore a hrm all day and lived a normal day. Not a work out or anything out of my ordinary. I was shocked. You might like to do that to get the general idea of where you are burning extra..say the shopping. I was advised next time to wear the monitor all night as well. Good Luck.

I have my activity level set as sedentary. I think I am going to log them. However I am def not eating back the calories.

I wouldn't. If you weren't shopping you'd be doing something else. I'm set at Sedentary too.

Just FYI, a HRM is not meant to be worn all day, only during activity as it is not designed to calculate calories at rest. A Body Bugg or something similar is designed for full time usage.

I understand, aka i was told, that HRM are meant to measure cardio workouts and unless your heart rate was getting up into a cardio workout range, that it probably would be accurate. I wore mine playing softball one night and it registered a huge burn. I certainly had moments of a veey high heart rate, but most of the night was standing around. The burn it calculated was nowhere near what it felt like. I didn't eat those calories back.

I would say err on the side of caution and don't record the calories, but if you do, don't eat those back. Don't fool yourself into eating calories which you may not have really burned.

Now if you do some sort of cardio shopping where you are doing lunges down the aisle, then that's another story!! :-)
