At least 80% of weight loss comes from eating less. It's so easy to say.....I went for a walk, now I can have fries instead of a salad with my hamburger.

Input your data into MFP (My Fitness Pal).....they will give you a number of calories to MEET, before exercise. Then log your exercise & eat 50-75% of those calories also. The reason you eat just a portion back....calorie burns are estimates.....the food you log is an estimation too (although we all strive to be accurate).

Continue to exercise for fitness, and health purposes. I do cardio (which I love) and strength/resistance train (not so much)....because I want to lose fat & keep muscle. Strength/resistance training helps me keep more lean muscle.

Besides, I should be moving more, not because I'm on a diet, but because being a couch potato won't help me maintain the weight I lost.

Hi, and welcome. There is some great information in some existing posts, so rather than rehash everything here for you I will paste a link. Exercise is great for fitness, but food portioning/calorie counting is where you will have the most success for losing weight. There are several threads in this link that will provide you with some great advice:

Add some friends here for support, if that is something that will help. Best of luck!

Well first off it's worth mentioning that no amount of exercise or strength training focused on the abdominals will help you lose fat from that area of your body. You cannot choose where you lose fat from. What you can do is eat at a calorie deficit and consistently lose weight and eventually the fat will come off where you want.

As far as diet advice, plug your stats into MFP and get your calorie goal. Make sure your macronutrients are set up properly. It's ideal if you set your protein to 1 gram per pound of LEAN BODY MASS. Dietary fat should be set to 0.4 grams per pound of body weight, but can be set lower if you are obese. The rest of your calories can go to carbohydrates. As far as what to eat, eat whatever you want that has you hitting your calorie and macro goals (especially hit your protein goal and fat goal). Also if you don't already own one, buy a food scale and weigh and measure everything before you eat it so you can track calorie intake accurately. Many people plug food into MFP by estimating and don't weigh it and find that they're not losing weight while sticking to their goal, when in reality they can easily be consuming 500 calories more than what they think they are everyday.

You don't need to stay away from anything. You just need to manage your portions.

Measuring portions and logging them is eye-opening. Some things you eat are great! Other things you currently eat may not be. You might log something and say....that's totally not worth it.....or the portion size is what!(?)

Protein, fat, and fiber are all filling. Whole foods retain more of their nutrients than processed ones. Example: I swapped out white bread for whole wheat because the whole wheat has more protein and fiber. Whole fruits retain fiber....juices not so much, besides they may have added sugar. Veggies are a great way to add volume to dishes without using up so many calories.

I leave room for a treat everyday. I am more selective now. I know I can't have snacks whenever.

Go to the top of your MFP page, click on My Home > Goals. Under "Daily Nutrition Goals" click the green "Edit" button. Set your goals to the appropriate values.

Of course you can exercise! It's great for you. I have never had people laugh at me when I work out. When I started this I had about 100lbs to lose. Most people who see you working out are either 1) thinking how great it is that you are working out or 2) too busy with their own workout to think anything.

Exercise is a great way to preserve your muscle while eating in a calorie deficit.

The part about the keyboard covering your post is the reason why I usually post from the website. I hate trying to fix my typos using my phone. It's not really efficient.

Yes, you absolutely can and should exercise, just make sure step 1 is that your diet is in check. There is a very common misconception that people who are overweight think that they will be laughed at or made fun of if they exercise and because of that many overweight people decide not to lift weights and decide not to do any cardio. You will find that in reality, the vast majority of people will give you a ton of credit just because you're out there trying to make a positive change. It's much much more likely that someone who is obese gets made fun of for eating 3000 calories in 1 sitting in a Mcdonalds, than it is that they get made fun of trying to better themselves, it honestly just doesn't happen very much at all.

Your goal should be to create a calorie deficit (that is, to burn more calories than you consume). You can do that in two ways: (1) eating less (consuming less); and (2) exercising more (burning more calories).

If you JUST add exercise and don't change the way you eat, you will lose weight. If you JUST reduce the amount you consume and don't exercise, you will lose weight. But if you do both-- reduce your calorie intake AND exercise--then you will lose weight faster!

And don't worry about what people think. Do what you need to do to take care of you. If you let "what others will think of me" govern how you spend your time, then honey, your weight is far from your only problem. Their thoughts are their thoughts--and YOU can't control them. You can only control YOU.

My primary mode of exercise is swimming. Now, it ain't pretty when I get in a swimsuit, but I figure if anyone is paying more attention to MY workout than to THEIR OWN, that's their problem. And here are some ACTUAL comments that I have heard from swimmers around me:
* "don't swim in the lane next to THAT one-- she moves too much water"
* "she swims like an outboard motor on a rhino"
and my favorite:
"damn, that fat chick in lane 2 can crank out some serious laps"

Good for what? Weight loss? All food is good for weight loss, it all depends on how much of it you eat.
