NSV: Deadlifted more than my body weight!

Had a great Stronglifts 5x5 workout last night! I deadlifted 165lbs (more than my body weight) for the first time! Felt like a badass!

I was so jazzed, I went home and took progress pics - something I have seriously been lacking in. I've lost almost 40 lbs since Christmas, though I'm back to around the 30-35 lb mark now that I've switched to maintenance and been eating to lift. It still floors me when I can see, side by side, how much my body has changed!

And, for reference....

Wow, that's some amazing progress! Was that weight for 5 reps, or a 1RM?

    Thanks!

I'm new to free-weights - never done a 1RM before. Just started Stronglifts at the end of July, though I'd done strength training with machines and such in the past. How do I go about it? Just add 5 lbs until I can't anymore?

I'd say next time you go in the gym to do deadlifts, do a warm up set with light weight, maybe 115lbs for 10 reps. Then load the bar up with 185 lbs and go for one rep. I would add that it is important that you have your form down before you attempt a 1RM, so if your form still needs work, I'd hold off, but if it's good, go for it.

Thanks for the tips! I might try it in a couple of weeks :-)
