Hi.

I found the app myfitnesspal on Friday and I downloaded it to my iphone.

Very impressed with the whole set up and decided to give it a go, I am 6 ft 6 and currently weigh, well weighed, on Friday 285lb.

I've set a target of losing 2lb per week and ive been allocated 1990 calories to do this, i stepped on the scales this morning for the first time since Friday morning and they say 276.8, is that even possible! I was 230 ish calories under my allowance on the first day and around 200 over on the second day, the second day included a brisk 4mph walk for 45 mins.

My target is 200lb so at the start i had 85lb to lose, is it normal to see such a large weight loss in the first few days?

I don't know if it's "normal" but I lost like 4.5 lbs my first week.

Really you should only weigh yourself once a week as your weight can change up to 2lbs in a day due to water. If your drinking your 8 glasses of water a day that usually shifts pounds in the first week. When I increased my water intake I lost 3lbs in a week, but that would of been water my body was retaining due to not drinking enough water.

First week or two will be fast!! I lost about 10lbs in the first fortnight so its definitely possible you've lost that much so far!

It'll probably slow down to a steady 2lbs soon - which, although it seems like an anticlimax after the initial big loss, is the healthiest way to lose!

To be honest I havent had any water as i dont really like it, odd i know. Suppose im going to have to get that sorted. Do you all drink just tap water or do you get in bottled water from the supermarkets? I'd much prefer soft drinks like 7up free/sprite zero, are these ok as a substitute?

Going to be doing quite a lot of walking during this diet as i like to take my son (hes 1) to the park when mummy is at work and because im quite tall i walk pretty fast, I read a fantastic post a bit down saying you should do your best to eat back your excercise numbers, going to enjoy that!

I've tried dieting before and i always seem to become totally addicted to getting on the scales, im talking 2 or 3 times a day, i find it really hard to not weigh myself for more than a day, any tips there?! Maybe have the wife take the scales to work lol

Also, i was searching for apps like this one to help me along with my diet that in my head i was going to start on Monday, I found this on Friday and i just had to do it immediately lol It makes me want to beat that 1990 figure!

I've been eating big steaks and having some beers and crisps and ice lollies the last two days though so in my mind i havent really started to diet, its time to get the stubborn head on and cut out a lot of that i suppose.

I do like to have a beer every now and then so if i do a brisk 4mph walk for an hour and burn in the region of 646 calories, is it stupid to get them back in the form of 3 pints of fosters?! I'm looking at what i just wrote and am thinking of course it is!

when counting water you are supposed to only count plain water/bottled water. I never really liked water but I am determined to lose weight so I stopped drinking the diet sodas and ice teas and started drinking water., Now I like water and dont drink anytihng else. You can always start out drinking flavored waters along with the regular water. And no sodas are not a subsititute for water.
I also lost like 10 lbs the first week when i started this journey.

    Good luck!

It is totally normal to lose a lot in the first few days of any diet.

Your body begins to draw on your Glycogen stores, each gycogen molecule has approx double the water attached so you lose fast. You will find your true weight loss rate once this has gone, this has usually been achived within 10 days max.

Its great that i can put my weight as 276.8 in the tracker thing now then, im amazed.

Going to have to go on a "diet supermarket shop" getting me some stuff like chicken breast and some nice crispy lettuce and some interesting soups!

Thanks for the advice on here, much appreciated, hopefully one day in the not too distant future il have a little thing under my posts saying LOST 85lb :-)

    Hi!

I am like you I'm on the scales almost every time I go to the loo which can be alot as I drink so much lol!
I know what my natural weight fluctuations are so an increase isn't a worry for me. I do only log my weight loss once a week if not once every two weeks though. Try it you'll probably have lost more by Friday!

Also on the water front you could try no added sugar juice. I drink it and it's had no negative effects on my weightloss!

Oh and be very careful with Pre made soups! I found a couple of days ago they are packed full of salt! Almost half the daily limit in one can! If you have too much sodium/salt in your diet you can retain water!

Thanks for that Kell, I was going to ask the question how often do people log their weight.

Think I will log my weight every Sunday now as I have logged it today, going to get to the supermarket and get the cupboards full of the good stuff! I'm hoping my wife might join me on this journey so that we can spur each other on making it a little easier, we will see.

Its a good busy community you have here, going to enjoy it.

Must be. I thought maybe I had misread the scales at first but since then I've seen a lot of posts with the same results!

    A couple things:

-Yes, it happens. I'm still losing quick sometimes. But it SLOWS big time.

-Drink water. Seriously. It's the best thing you can do for yourself. Those sodas and junk will only make you retain water and ruin your teeth. No bueno.

-Soups have MASSIVE amounts of sodium, too. Which will also make you retain water. Muchos preservatives. Again, no bueno. You want to try to eat as clean as possible. Instead, get some chicken, celery, carrots, whatever else you like, and make your own soup.

Don't worry about it. So long as you are eating enough to feel energetic, preferably eating low-sodium and high-nutrient foods and doing some exercise a few days a week your weight loss is all natural. You could consider taking measurements too. Not only are they a better measure of how other people perceive you, but they indicate better whether your weight loss is purely due to fat loss, or whether you might be destroying lean muscle.

Exactly right ...it's likely to be mostly water.
Feels nice though, doesn't it :0)

I will get some measurements up then i think, see how they change over time, hopefully i can get down to a size where i can go into a shop and expect to actually see my waist size on the rails lol
