Hi. I am just returning to MFP after quite an absence and have become a golfer since my last visit. I see that in the input box for golf you have to put in 'how long'. Is thisninput in total munutes. I put in 240 (4 hours and that comes up at 1bout 1100 cal burn. Just thought that that seems like a lot so wanted to check if I am right putting it in in minutes. Thanks if you can advise.

Are you walking or carting?0

It is a very inflated estimate. If you're a golfer and it's party of your lifestyle, you maybe should just include that in your activity level. Seems like you might want to try to log it as a couple hours of walking if not.0

I'm walking QueenLiz and alwàys at a fairly keen pace. O.k. Arditarose - that might be a good plan. In the summer I play a lot so could adjust my lifestyle, but in the winter here it rains fairly non stop so my golfing pattern would be more erratic. Makes sense to log it as walking. Thanks ladies!

Sometimes the calorie burns in MFP are overstated. If you are not losing or losing too fast adjust your calorie outtake.0 -

Please keep in mind the cals burned included maintenance cals (cals you would have burned had you know worked out. this is usually in the 1.0-1.75 cals/minute. so in that 4 hours you would have burned 240-420, just doing your normal day to day. I would suggest being conservative and take the 420 off, to give you just under 700 cals.
FYI, even walking included cals you would have burned had you not walked.0 -
yes, the time is in minutes.
If you walked for 4 hours only stopping long enough to take a stroke, you could have easily cleared 10 miles (3 mph pace) walking. That is enough for 1000 calories for a 150lb man.
If you carried your bag, it would be slightly more, if you ride in a cart it will be significantly less. If you walked really slowly or stood/sat around, then it would be less.0 -
Thanks everyone! That's been a great help!0

It's more than most people think. Walking 18 holes is roughly 5 miles. In my loss from 257 to 195 I logged 500 for 18 holes with a cart and 750 when I walked (pull cart) with both of them rounded down from various sources. I play twice a week in season.

I played a lot of golf in college and graduate school, and I'd say the fitness benefit is based more on distance than time. We played a lot of long rounds! I would just enter it as walking the distance of the course, and use a gps app on my phone to determine that distance. If the course is wide open in front of you all day, then adjust the walking speed accordingly. Also, the calories from snacks still count, even on the golf course. The way I look at it now, a leisurely round of golf is what I can do because I'm healthy, and not the other way around.0

I always logged 100 cals per hour. It most likely is more (it was about 14,000 steps after all) but I always err on the low side!

Thanks everyone. I know my golfcourse is about 6Km so can work it out from there I guess. Thanks for all the info! I imagine the swinging doesn't add too much more. Best to under estimate a little than over estimate.0

When I play golf I just go by what my Fitbit One says, and just note that a played that day.0
