By the way, I am still finding my way around the site. Do any of you have any hints on how to find especially helpful information? Favorite message threads or blog posts etc? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Here are a couple of great threads that helped me a lot:

I'm in! But I don't have a clue what that means. Not sure how to start a group or add friends, but I will learn. I am 46 and my metabolism changed dramatically. I am just starting and frankly every pound will be a goal achieved...but hoping for about 37 lbs. also, I am Canadian if there are any other Canucks out there!0

Hey everyone, this is my first post. I'll be 47 next week and thanks to menopause and stress I've got about 80 pounds to lose. I'm on a mission to get healthy! I quit smoking 4 months ago and now I'm ready to tackle my weight. I've struggled with my weight my entire life but have managed to keep it within healthy range until I hit 45 and it just started packing on! I would love to join your midlifers group for some friendly motivation & support.0

Hi, I'm 48 and been on MFP for a little over a year. I've lost 31 pounds so far and I've got about 19 more to reach my original goal of losing 50 pounds. I'm an active poster on on MFP, post a couple of blog posts a month and am there to support my friends. 382 days straight of logging food and exercise. I went from being "plus sized" to a misses 14. Haven't been this light since the mid-90's. Feel free to add me0

I am looking for midlife friends too. I have about 20 - 25 to lose but at age 52 it might as well be a gazillion. Anyone can add me.0

It's totally possible. It's taken me awhile but I've managed to lose almost 25 so far.0 -
I'm 37. Probably almost in the middle of my life. I'm not living to be 100.0

Hello welcome
You can do it
Feck it, if I could, anyone can
Most important thing is calories: weigh all your food (no cups), log accurately..double check cos MFP database is inaccurate in the extreme, use the recipe builder, this gets easier and quicker
Progressive lifting ...see Strong Curves, New Rules of Lifting for Women ...protect your existing muscle..it's important for bone density, looking tight and taut and getting your body back
Don't make excuses ..age is not a factor, your willpower and stubbornness and commitment is
Good luck all
These might help

Lifting
Books:Strong Curves, New Rules of Lifting for Women
Structured online programmes
http://stronglifts.com/5x5/
https://www.muscleandstrength.com/workouts/jason-blaha-ice-cream-fitness-5x5-novice-workout
http://www.muscleandfitness.com/workouts/workout-routines/4-week-guide-starting-strength
Why?
Also Staci
http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2011/07/21/meet-staci-your-new-powerlifting-super-hero/
If you can't bring yourself to do free weights yet then do a decent bodyweight programme
http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2009/12/09/beginner-body-weight-workout-burn-fat-build-muscle/
But it all comes down to calorie intake for fat loss so don't forget your calorie counting
