Protein shakes?!

I'm wanting to lose weight and tone up a bit, get lean. Is drinking protein shakes a long with cardio, heavy lifting and a good diet a good idea? If so what protein would you reccomend?

Hemp protein (Nutiva) has both protein and fiber with amino acids, but it tastes like delicious sand.
Unsweetened whey protein (I like Jarrow) is great because you add whatever sweetener/flavor you want, but no fiber to speak of.
Chia seeds have protein and fiber and Omega-3, but they're higher in calories than you might like.
I don't exercise at all at the moment, but I eat a lot of protein because I'm losing weight and want to retain muscle. I'll let the gym rats *kiss* discuss cardiovascular/weight training stuff.0 -

I lift heavy, eat at a deficit & supplement my healthy diet with protein shakes. I use vanilla whey protein so I can flavor it with fruit or cocoa powder if I want. I've shed a fair amount of fat & 9 lbs since September.0

I don't get as much protein as I would like so I use this and dig it a lot.

I drink the Premiere protein shakes from Costco. 160 calories and 30 grams of protein. Hard to beat that.0

Sounds good but remember, protein shakes should ideally be used just to keep your macros on point. You should take maximum 2 scoops a day and get the rest of your protein from quality foods. I recommend standard Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein Isolate (flavor is obviously up to you). Best of luck bro!0

Yes, but only if you aren't getting enough protein from regular food sources. It's not a linear muscle gain as you increase protein intake. It drops off and has no further impact beyond around 1g/lb of your weight.
I use protein shakes, because I am a very boring and bland eater, so all kinds of good sources of protein like eggs etc are just off limits to me. Without shakes, I can't hit my target of 0.85g/lb most days, unless I've eaten a non-typical amount o meat.0 -
Gnc lean 25 shakes are very good! Sam's club.0

Protein is important but shakes are optional. Check out bodybuilding.com for reivews of several different types of protein. I think egg white protein is popular with those wishing to lose weight and firm up. You can buy pasteurized egg white in grocery stores. You can also use whole eggs depending on how you plan to use them. With pasteurized egg whites you can add them directly to the blender along with fruit and a little sweetener for a simple smoothy. There are also vegan forms of protein which is also good if you want to get lean. I haven't been able to find a vegan protein that is tolerable for me.0 -
If you are a member of Costco or Sam's club see what they have. Also visit walmart, since they have good prices on basic stuff.0

I just ate an egglands best egg for breakfast.
A glass of skim milk with 8 grams of protein.
Slices of extra lean (high quality) deli ham.

I've drank protein shakes ever since I started going to the gym and losing weight. I try not to do more than 1 a day just because I know its not something I'm going to continue to do my whole life... meaning I must find a way to eat that provides me with the nutrition I need.
That said I have tried a lot of different ones, shakes the gym makes, shakes you make yourself, and ones you can just buy in the bottle ready to drink. As long as they keep you full it really doesn't matter. Not many of them taste great but I have found a shake from Bolthouse Farms that tastes good to me, they have coffee flavored and that really jump starts my morning!
Like another said though, when taking in a large amount of protein you will need to eat a large amount of fiber too... just helps keep everything moving.0
