Check on Craigslist. You may get lucky and get a free pair.

X2 about Craigslist - I have a small gym at home - squat rack, - bench - Olympic weights, dumbells . got most of it used. You will be able to get used equipment cheap in a couple months after the New Year resolutions fade. start looking - Eastcoast Jim

I buy most of my equipment at Play It Again Sports if you have one close by. I find the prices fairly cheap.

Play It Again Sports is an actual store that sells used equipment. I have also bought some things from Academy Sports...their prices seem reasonable.

I remember seeing a 40 lb dumbbell set (2 dumbbells and plates) on ebay for less than 30 dollars.

In general, an iron based dumbbell is going to cost about a dollar a pound new. You can get used cheap (not sure why you have an issue with craigslist as that is the most cost effective route). Adjustable sets can be pricy (more than $30), but you’re getting a full range of dumbbells for less than the cost of each one (and they take up much less space).

If you’re dead set on local retail, then you can probably get two 10 pound or two 15 pound dumbbells for $25 - $30 from walmart. Not sure how much that will do for you as you get stronger.
