First off there's no clear or consistent definition of which foods are clean and which are not. Aside from that, judging a food without taking in context or dosage is just a flawed approach. Some people would consider an apple to be a concretely healthy food. In reality, there are situations where eating an apple is unhealthy. Many people consider ice cream to be concretely unhealthy. In reality, there are situations where eating ice cream is healthy. The major flaw of the philosophy of "eating clean" is that it says certain foods are healthy, and always healthy and you should eat those foods, and other foods are unhealthy, and always unhealthy and you should either never eat them, or severely limit them. That is just in illogical and flawed way of approaching nutrition.

I agree with you in principle, but I'm curious to know under what circumstances you'd judge eating an apple to be unhealthy?

If you have your calorie goal set at 2000 calories a day, it's the end of the day and you've hit your calorie goal exactly at 2000 calories, you've hit your macronutrient, micronutrient, and fiber goals all dead perfect for the day. If you were to then eat an apple, it would be an unhealthy decision, not to mention that once micronutrient goals are met, your body receives no added advantage from additional micronutrients. It is not a "more is better" situation, it is a matter of whether or not you are getting sufficient micronutrients.
