Did you set a weight loss goal into MFP (ie: lose 1 lb/week)? If so, then you should eat all of your 1400 calories. You'll still lose weight because it's already been calculated in.
If/When you exercise, log the activity into MFP but only eat back about half of the calories burned. Common thought is that the MFP activity calories are rather high. You should eat back the exercise calories to fuel the workout You'll still lose weight because its calculated into your daily calories.

In general, the idea is to eat your daily calories plus half your exercise calories to lose the goal you set into MFP.

It does not matter what you eat. Just maintain your calories and you'll lose the weight. You will be able to eat more volume with lower calorie foods, which may keep you feeling fuller, but the weight will come off even if you eat higher calorie foods as long as you stay within your limits.

    It works. Trust it.

Correct - IF that is your personal deficit.
  • I've learned that not all calories are created equal... I have greater success when I eat healthier rather than just by making sure I stay in range. That may just be me though.

It's just you. You may feel you have better success because you get to eat more food if you incorporate healthier choices. 300 calories of broccoli will be more voluminous than 300 calories of french fries, therefore you don't feel hungry, you don't starve, you don't binge and you reach your goals.

@moniquekj978 Yes. If you eat less calories than you burn, you will lose weight.

Technically, yes. But keep in mind that some foods are going to be more satisfying than others. The trick is to find foods that satisfy so that when you reach your 1400 calorie goal, you are not still hungry. Foods that are high in protein tend to pack the most bang for the buck in this regard.

    This^

With calorie reduction (and old habits) you're going to be hungry. Your diet to lose weight doesn't have to be perfect, instead aim for improvements. Fat & fiber are filling components too.

^ I also agree with this, but would add it's important to be mindful that your body requires a variety of adequate nutrients for optimal function.

One COULD lose weight eating 1400 calories of (insert your favorite food here)...but a better choice would be to eat appropriate portion sizes of a variety of foods within your calorie budget.

Yes, a calorie deficit is what matters for fat loss. But if your calorie goal is 1400 you should not be under that everyday. You should be at or close to it everyday on average.
