Does anyone know if you weigh more when your muscles ache after a work out..

I'm due to get weighed tonight and I ache everywhere from a class on Monday night, I really don't want this to influence my WI, but I have read somewhere that it does. can this be true?

in my experience, yes you do. I think it is because your sore muscles are holding onto fluid for rebuilding and strenthening. I weighed in at weight watchers last week after doing day 1 of the 30 day shred and I gained .4 lbs. The day before I exercised, I had lost over a pound. I weighed myself a few days later and I was back to where I started.

The most accurate time to weigh in would be first thing in the morning, before you eat or drink anything and after a trip to the bathroom.

That is the most recommended as its closest to your 'true' weight.

your muscles will tend to retain water to recover from the workout.

This topic makes me feel a little better. Maybe thats why the scale didnt move this morning after doing day 1 of the 30 day shred yesteday. I woke up really sore.

Your muscles may be retaining water if they're sore, but try upping your water intake today to help "flush them out". I've heard that they only hold onto water for fear of not getting more, but if you give them plenty, they should let at least some of it go...
  • Thanks for all the replies, I am now not looking forward to going to class!!!

mixtapemusings - thanks for the info, but unfortunately I need the weekly WI with someone so cant do this before work - thanks for the info.

I'm sure I should have lost weight, but this morning my sneaky peak at the scales says I haven't! will let you know how i get on later!

I'll never forget going to WW years ago and I'd just been to the gym or done something strenuous. The scales was not my friend and I mentioned to the leader that it might have had something to do with my recent "activity". She pretty much rubbished it but I just knew she was wrong as I was pretty much an every day scales visitor. Over the past number of years I've noticed it even more. Sure only last night I came home from Boxing, hopped up on the scales for a little look (stupid I know) and was about 4 lbs heavier than I had been that morning. Even allowing for food I wouldn't have expected that.

So in a very long winded way, my gut says that yes, you do weigh more after a workout, even though I don't know the science behind it!

Wow, so not such a silly question then! I had no idea, I've really learnt something today.

Well your weight probably won't be affected immediately after any workout no matter how sore your muscles are. If there is any truth to this then you would probably retain more weight over the course of several hours to a day depending on how torn the muscles are. So weighing yourself immediately after working out you won't weigh any more or less when comparing muscle soreness.
  • Well I got weighed yesterday and I was 2lb done! very happy with that and also hoping that the aching muscle had banked me 1lb for next week (i can hope). still aching a little so guessing I worked well in circuits on Monday!!!

Thanks again for all the replys.
