Is it true?

Is it true that the weight will stay off longer if you lose it slower?

I started at 140 and am at 133 now and have been calorie counting for 4 days. I'm assuming some of that is water weight. I am doing the Hungry Girl Diet and it's really low sodium. I don't know for sure what my goal weight is because I don't understand ideal weights. When I google it, my ideal weight is 130-150 but that just doesn't seem right.

I dont want to get all excited if this number is just going to go right back up because I'm doing it wrong.

Not necessarily. The weight will stay off when you learn a method that you can keep doing forever. People who lose weight quickly rarely find a sustainable method. They're also at risk for losing lean mass, which makes it harder to keep the weight off. Losing lean mass also means you end up having to lose more weight total in the long run.

I think if you are at the low end of your ideal weight range you may have low lean mass. Incorporating some form of resistance/strength/weight training can help improve how you look without having to lose more weight.

okay. I had to read that a few times. This is all very new to me.

So should I try to maintain my current weight and add strenth training? I know I dont want to lose lean mass but honestly, I have no idea what i'm doing.

Yes, you should change your goal to maintain your current weight and incorporate some strength training. At first you might gain a couple of pounds in water weight, but over the long run you'll lose fat and improve your body composition.

    Okay, that makes sense.

It changed my calories from 1320 to 1800 something! I really like the Hungry Girl diet. She has great recipes and really taught me everything I know about calories. Which apparently still isn't much. But I felt like something was wrong when I lost pounds overnight. Not that it wouldn't be awesome. It's just never what I heard of as healthy.

This. That was the question I was going to ask.

Good indication that your current diet is not sustainable, and as usmcmp said, when you stop you'll go back to eating like you did before

    My thoughts exactly.

I suspect the OP's deficit is too aggressive, and/or they're on some sort of deprivation diet.

So many newbies don't know about eating the things they love in moderation.

Weight not important. Percent Body Fat is. Recalulate your goal based on desired percent Body Fat. (ie: 20%)

There's no way I can go to bed hungry, that's for sure. Even if I'm at my limit, I still eat a hundred or so calories before bed so I don't go to bed hungry. I guess I wasn't looking at is as a sustainable way to live. Just to lose weight and then add more calories later for maintenance.

It's the Hungry Girl Diet. So that's basically no sugar, low sodium, lots of vegetables and a fair amt of protein. It's supposed to be really good for low blood sugar, which is what drew me to it. And for that it worked! It does let me eat things I love, for sure. Like mushrooms but you have to measure them.

It's 1300 calories a day. I'm tracking with myfitnesspal though and when I put in my weight and goals it said I could have 1360. So that's what I did.

Usually yes, but for one reason only: People that lose weight slower tend to actually change their eating habits for good.
Of course it's not always the case, but most of the time it's true.
When you change your lifestyle you lose weight as a good consequence, so even when you reach your goal, you still have the good lifestyle habit, so you will probably keep your weight from going back up.

The weight will stay off as long as you continue not to eat more calories than you burn.

Your BMI is 22.1, in the middle of the BMI range.

Your "hungry girl diet" will probably help and since you are doing it on MFP you are learning to count calories ; useful when you decide to stick to 1360 cals without the restrictions on sugar.

What was your GW when you started?

Since you are already "normal" it becomes harder to give you advice unless we know your specific goals. What are you trying to achieve: A lower weight on the scale for the sake of it? A better figure? Getting back in old clothes? Health?

What didn't feel right was that I lost 7 pounds in 3 days when 15 pounds is the max I wanted to lose. I'd always heard that about a half pound a week is great if you dont have much to lose. I think at first it was water weight but I'm having a hard time believing that I acutally lost 4 or so pounds in fat in just a few days. It doesnt seem right.

I do really like the diet because I'm learning so much about counting calories.

    What does GW mean?

My goal is just a better figure. I do tend to obsess over numbers so I want to try to not make it about the scale even though I know a scale is necessary.

GW is goal weight... what you're aiming for.

You could have lost weight due to:

    initial diet weight/water/waste loss
    time of month water loss.

Are you sure you need to lose more weight, or do you need to gain more muscle?

    Look at this:

Best wishes, and good to see you enjoying learning. I've found MFP very educational too!

I'm positive it was water at the beginning. I always held a lot of water when pregnant and it seemed like that same swolen look. And I know I needed to lose a little weight because my ring didn't fit. Well now my ring fits and I dont look like I'm carrying water anymore. So now I dont know what the stopping point should finally be, the GW. What usmcmp said at the beginning of the thread made sense to me because I do need to work on my stomach. I guess I'll just have to be content with the numbers on the scale at some point.

And thanks! I've learned a ton in these few days!

Recently posted by @ilex70 in another thread. See myths #3 and #4.

People should find what works for them and go with it. Slow and steady might win the race for some, but not all. In the end what people can do long term to maintain is great. For some just getting to maintenance is the real struggle.
