How bad are flour tortillas?

I eat almost every morning 2 scrambled eggs wrapped with a flour tortilla. Kind of eggs to-go idea. Im wondering how bad tortillas are for diets? Would I be better off taking the time to make oatmeal?

Well, you can always get lower calorie or higher fiber tortillas. But if your current brand fits into your calorie goals and doesn't make you sleepy, like flour products do to me, I don't see any reason to change.

    Not bad. Delicious.

Are you tracking calories? Are you counting the calories from the tortillas? Are you still under your calorie goal?

If yes to all of the above, I cannot see how there could be a problem.

If they fit in your calories they are not bad.

If it fits your calorie goals then it is fine for weight loss to eat a tortilla. You could add some vegetables to your scrambled egg wrap.
I'm not sure why you think oatmeal would be better unless you want a little more fiber.

If you want to eat tortillas and they fit in your calories then there is nothing wrong with that. The only thing that I think is wrong with your breakfast buritto is that it needs potatoes and hot sauce. Lol. Really though, if that's what you like then go for it. It is definitely more portable than oatmeal.

But are they homemade or restaurant flour tortillas? :p

    Seriously, you'll be fine.

I honestly fell for one of those articles saying these are the newest facts about nutrient. DON'T eat this! MUST eat that. It didn't sound right, so that's why I posted. They definetly fit into my calorie count and I am always way below on my carb counts. But the article did make me wonder that maybe I was doing something wrong.
    Thanks for all the replies.

You're fine. The vast majority of those types articles are written from a complete misunderstanding of nutrition.

Some of the best things are labor intensive. We'd miss a lot of good things if we avoided them simply bc they are labor intensive. ;-)

Good for you to be skeptical of the article!

Healthier in what way? Calories are about the same and one may get more fiber, but other than that, it's not a great step up.

Mission Brand flour tortilla- 140 calories, 24g carbs, 1g fiber, 1g sugar, 4g protein
    wheat tortilla- 130 calories, 25g carbs, 3g fiber, 3g sugar, 4 protein

Hmmm. Mine are the opposite. Mix flour, milk, baking powder, butter, and salt into an ear lobe soft dough (a couple minutes), rest 15 minutes under damp cloth, divide into eight and roll into balls, rest another 15 minutes under damp cloth, roll out, stretch, 35 seconds per side on a scorching hot comal on the stove.

But they do run 145 calories per tortilla. (:

Check out ole xtreme wellness high fiber tortillas, they are only 50 calories with 11g fiber. I use them everyday with 2 eggs, spinach and some cheese for breakfast.

You could sub a corn tortilla for 50 calories.

OP, you might want to look into low carb tortillas. Nothing wrong with regular tortillas, but I actually like low carb ones better and they are only 60-80 calories, and have a lot of protein and fiber too. More expensive but I'll never go back. I love Tumaro's, la Tortilla Factory, and Flat Out.

I get the low carb wheat fiber flour tortillas from trader joes because they are lower calorie and actually good lol. I'm not low carb at all. They are taco sized for 45 cal for the weight given on the package - however I weigh them because I've never had a flour tortilla be the weight on the package - any brand. The tj ones usually end up 50ish calories. Definitely weigh any flour tortilla no matter the brand.

Most of the time I use corn tortillas and crisp them up myself for tacos or I buy the tostadas.

Second this. I have no issue with carbs... i simply find some carbs make me feel full... and some carbs add calories and leave me hungry. I find complex carbs tend to have more staying power. If you don't feel hungry and hit your goals... eat whatever you want. If you struggle... I say swap out the simple carbs for more complex carbs.

If you do make your own try and use organic corn. All other is genetically modified and if you are going to put the effort into making them why not use better ingredients. Spelt flower is even better. Just trying to be helpful.

    ITYMTS

    Ezekiel 4:9 - Sprouted Grain Tortillas -150 calories, 24g carbs, 5g fiber, 0g sugar, 6g protein

Only slightly better nutritionally (and I grant you, more expensive), but dang, so much tastier, and (to me) more filling.

(I don't dispute your main point, BTW - the difference between equivalent quality/price white and "whole wheat" tortillas is usually negligible. Many of the "whole wheat" ones have a big fraction of white flour anyway.)

I like both wheat and corn tortillas. The flour ones I get locally are 100 cals each (fajita size, smaller than the burrito "wrap" ones). The corn ones I prefer are 50 cals each, but I have to double up on them otherwise they break. So, basically the same either way (small macro difference, but doesn't impact my whole day).

I eat either based on what I have and my mood.
