Here are links to a couple of groups. I tried 5:2 for awhile (not for me, too many headaches). Intermitent fasting is just another way to get to calorie deficit. I don't see why it wouldn't be safe for older people (I'm 54). If you have blood sugar issues.........then there might be a problem.

I tried 5:2 and hated it. I was miserable on my fasting days and had nothing on my mind but what I could eat on the days where I could. This was probably a year ago that I tried for a few weeks and gave up.
Currently I am doing 20:4 fasting. 20 hours of the day I don't eat or drink anything with calories, then I have a 4 hour window where I can eat my caloric budget. I have been doing this for a few weeks now and I LOVE it. I am never hungry and I still get to "binge" at night when I am always tempted to. The last time I went over my calories was 12/30 of last year before I started doing this.
IF is not for everyone but if it works for you, hooray!1 -
I have done Eat Stop Eat which is basically one or two 24 hour fasts (eating and drinking no calories) a week, then eating normally (ie at maintenance) the other days. I liked it, but currently find it is not fitting with me. It is not some sort of magic, although there are health benefits from fasting longer than the ordinary overnight fast. Usually I did it by starting a fast after my evening meal, say 7PM, then not eating again until 7PM the next day when I would have a normal sized meal, usually between 500 and 800 calories. It worked well to establish a calorie deficit. One of the best books (an e-book) on this is Eat Stop Eat by Brad Pilon. I would recommend giving it a read.0

We are not doctors here so we cannot tell you that you are healthy enough to take on a specific type or way of eating, only you know this.
There are 24 hours fasts, 5:20 and the intermittent such as 16:8, 17:7, etc.. I have done 24 hour fast (like this better than any of them) and I always have been doing 16:8 just did not know there was name for it until last year..
This is not a diet. It is only a scheduled time frame to eat your calories either to loose weight (MFP deficit allotment) or maintenance calorie allotment..
This is a specific personal preference and it does not inhibit or promote weight loss, the DEFICIT does. You can just use this strategy to get you there..0 -
I have done 16/8- which is eating for 8 hours and not eating for 16 5-7 days a week. I would have a cup of black coffee when I got up then have lunch around 11-12 and dinner at 5-6 and be done eating by 7. I felt great while doing it - I'm not usually hungry for breakfast anyway. I think my body learned to burn fat, and I didn't need to count calories- I didn't gain as long and I followed that plan. Then came the holidays and company for weeks at a time and making breakfast for the grandkids etc and I quit IF--:-{. Now I am trying to get back on the horse, but am having problems stopping the eating at 7- I just keep eating candy until I take myself to bed! What is wrong with me????? Any way tonight I am going to get ready for bed at 7, brush my teeth and use fluoride mouth wash- hopefully that will put a stop to the insanity and get me back on track and feelin good! Good luck to you- hope you find something that works for you!0
