sick of being a fat chick, I want to be a fit chick!

So I finally decided to do something. My friend is a competitive power lifter and recommended this site and bodybuilding.com to get on track. She said I’ll have to start eating differently and lifting weights. She is totally ripped, but I don’t think that I want to look like a man. She also is refusing to help me out until I get my butt in gear. I’ve given up before I started many times before - so maybe she’s thinking it may motivate me? Anyhow, what are some easy ways to get started? I want to show her what I can do on my own!

Well just being on here, and reaching out for advice is the first step! Do you belong to a gym, or have any idea what kind of exercise you want to do? Also, what is your diet like now?0

you're not gonna look like a man.0

Hard to know what to tell you without your stats and an open diary.0 -
Definitely won't look like a man unless you already look like one0

Ha ! I can't ...0 -
Why in the heck would you look like a man?
What are your stats? Set up an appropriate goal to lose fat while you lift to maintain muscle mass. Show her what you set up here, and tell her you're ready to get started with a beginners full body lifting program.0 -

Haha exactly! I don't know why women always think this or where this myth started....It reminded me of this list I was reading the other day about how you know you are a "Fit Chick" lol these are too funny, and true - I think number 7 and number 13 apply here https://www.myliporidex.com/blog/15_signs_that_you_are_a_fit_girl/0 -
You'd have to gain a TON of muscle to look like a man. Fret not.0
-
Weightlifting doesn't make a women look like a man. It will lean you out. Unless you are on steroids, muscle gains are actually hard and don't just happen.0
-
Well...I know a lot of men and some of them have smaller muscles then me, LOL...I don't feel like I look like a man from the heavy lifting I do. But on serious note, educate yourself, set goals and stick with it.

Lifting heavy does not make females bulky. It's a sad, sad misconception.0

So...did you start yet? What are your first steps to achieve your goal?ChristinaOrr65 wrote: »singingflutelady wrote: »Definitely won't look like a man unless you already look like one

That's hilarious. All apply to me! LOL

Research is your best friend. But unless you act on any of it its pointless.0

Each body is different, and weight management is not one-size-fits-all so working with a licensed naturopath or functional medicine doctor can help you find the some of the biochemical and nutritional imbalances you are dealing with at first. The biggest thing to understand is that is not always about calories or weight or any one thing. Take a look at my site for a few ideas on things to think about to develop a well-rounded treatment plan. Best of luck on your journey. Dr Dave

OP, you need to get a food scale and put your stats into MFP to figure out how many calories you should be eating per day. How much weight are you looking to lose?
Also, if you want to preserve muscle while losing the weight, doing some sort of progressive lifting program (such as StrongLifts, New Rules of Lifting for Women, or Starting Strength) and getting adequate protein are both really important.

It is absolutely all about calories for 99% of the population - don't let some whack job fill your head with naturopathic mumbo jumbo (referring to one of the posts in this thread - which is completely false).
Good luck, and have fun!0 -

Losing weight takes some work. Getting ripped takes a lot of work. Looking like the competitive power lifters takes an enormous amount of work.
You haven't done anything yet.
Set a calorie goal, weigh and measure your food, see you in a week.0 -
what are your stats (has OP even been back?)
do you need to lose weight or start lifting or a combination of the two?
youre not going to look like a man unless you start taking testosterone and steroid injections ......
right now, presumably, you're sitting on your butt doing nothing, so its kind of a moot point.....0 -

OMG, I cant believe all the responses! Thanks so much for taking the time. Honestly, I was not expecting so much help and advice - I don't know where to start. Yes, I am sitting down, yes I am still fat. I thought about it more and lifting weights sounds like it could be great for me, but honestly I'm a bit scared of going to a gym. I was raised in manila, and am very religious - so the idea of being around so many people who are not properly clothed is very embarrasing to me. Call me modest or old fashioned, but why do you have to wear what that woman in blue has on? My friend looks like that, and I think she looks a man.
I will be buying some small weight to do with an exercise video. I saw the jillian michale on sale on amazon. Is that a good one?
I'm going to start eating less also. I am thankful to have found this site. I love it already. Blessing to you all.0 -

If I'm not mistaken, Jillian Michaels has some free videos on YouTube if you search for "30 Day Shred". YouTube has lots of exercise videos online if you get bored with just one.
And you don't have to dress like those girls in the picture. I usually just work out in a t-shirt and capri yoga pant things.0 -

I doubt it. they would have dq from their competition, which would defeat the purpose

You don't have to necessarily eat leas you just need to eat healthier. Logging food in here will help you learn what food you can and can't eat a lot of. Best of luck to you, small steps, little by little, as long as you do not give up you will get to your goals.0

Nobody at my gym wears a bikini unless they are at the pool. They'd get kicked out for breaking the rules. Most people just wear the usual fitness clothing0

Because of your cultural background, perhaps a women's-only gym like Curves, Get In Shape for Women, Lady of America would appeal to you.
Paging @ninerbuff because I think you are from the Philippines as well.0 -

Huh? What? That does not sound like a very good friend to me - I challenge you to reevaluate that particular "friendship".
In any case - there are no "easy" fixes. Follow the MFP plan, eat what is recommended for you, cardio for a minimum of 45 minutes/6x per week. Weight training is significant in developing muscle that will burn fat, but cardio in the very beginning is key.
And good luck

What is properly clothed to you? Do you mean not showing a midriff or full arms, or are you referring to the women in the photos? Those women are in bathing suits, not workout attire. While many people wear less clothing than they would normally to the gym, most are not too revealing. It gets hot in there though! Working out at home sounds like a good start until you can figure out where you would feel comfortable.0 -
Yeah, go for Jillian Michaels The 30 Day Shred, you'll love the results. You might even be spurred on to carry on lifting with heavier weights....whilst not looking like a man lol.
That's what happened to me.0
