Look for sales on meats at your local grocery store, that definitely helps! You can freeze the meat so you can have it later in the month.
Beans are good source of fiber and bulk up something bland like brown rice.
Canned tuna is relatively cheap...though you can only so much of it in one week.
Tofu is an excellent choice as well. Sure, not the tastiest, but it's a relative cheap source of protein that you can add to whole bunch of things. I like to may stirfry with it.
Frozen vegetables are excellent too. Helps make your meal more filling!
And in general, if you're trying to buy fresh produce, try to buy seasonal items. That's when the price is the best.

Do you cook? If not, start doing that. Think food groups: Vegetables, fruit, starch (grains, potatoes), nuts/seeds, dairy, protein (meat/fish/eggs/shellfish/beans), and fat/oils. Build up your meals by combining foods from the different food groups. You can pick and choose as you like, but make sure you eat something from every group every day - the food diary can help you balance your diet - and aim to get a variety through the day/week/year.

You don't have to buy any particular foods. Ordinary food is perfectly fine. Use recipes as guidelines; most ingredients can be substituted. Store brands are usually just as good as name brand. Food in season is cheapest and best, or buy frozen. Look at the price per pound, not per package. Plan your meals and don't buy/open more than you'll be able to eat before it spoils. Food will usually keep longer than expiration date - use your eyes - nose - tongue.

Try new things occasionally, but don't buy food you know you don't like just to be "healthy". That is just expensive garbage.

Depends on your goals and we don't know that.
