Please don't do that to your self. It's unhealthy0

Haha! It's actually the healthiest way to eat. I'll gladly educate you, if you'd like.. but to make a negative comment about something you don't know or fully understand is sadning. It's the best I've ever looked and felt. But you saying it's un healthy is your opinion but it actually being healthy for you is proven fact.. but I am open for questions and thoughts and opinions3

I just listened to a podcast on that and it really sounded good. How did you start was thinking about doing that0

Well.. it's funny that you ask.. I first learned about it from a YouTube video of two twin body builders that fast for 20 hours aday.. and they are at 8%body fat.. so from the research that I did and from all I've read, 20 hours of fasting is more for someone who gradually got there... it's not really recommend for someone first starting the program simply because your body hasn't quite adapted from not eat 3,4,or even 5 times a day.. so it's hard and discouraging to start right at 20 hours of fasting... but if u have enough will power, drive and determination, with realistic goals that will continue to make u push harder because of seen results then shoot for 20... but I would recommend starting at 16 hours 8pm to 12 pm lunchtime. And consume your 2500 calories or less if u wanna be in a caloric negative, till 8 pm again. And coffee is a great hunger suppression tool.. and if you can hold off drinking that first coffee till u actually start getting hungry it'll help you go even further throughout the day before eating... and then as you progress you can then start shorting your eating window and fasting for longer periods of time. .mind you water will be your best friend.. I can go on and on on.. does and fonts what to eat what to not eat too1

Why do you say it's unhealthy?
Personally I don't see why people get so hung up on subscribing to one particular way of eating every day. Some days I can do IF and eat between 12-8pm on two or three meals. Other days I want something to eat upon waking up so adjust other meals accordingly. I enjoy less frequent but bigger meals more. Small meals do nothing for me, everybody has different preferences.0 -
Exactly! !! They whole basis of flexible dieting!!0

Alternate Day Fasting is the best diet I have ever tried0

I've had good weight loss results with 19/5 fasting, but I found it hard to get all the micronutrients and photochemicals in one or two big calorie dense meals. I can't believe I never thought about combining it with juicing. I'd probably keep the juice within my eating window, but I will definitely try this next time I want to drop weight. Thanks for the tip!
By the way, there is at least one group on MFP devoted to various forms of IF. If you want support from people knowledgeable about a particular diet style, groups are the way to go.0 -
I've been watching their videos because I need to lose weight and get control of my cholesterol. I've been following the fastingtwins for a week now and watching their videos. I have to wait a little before I start since I was hospitalized a week ago with a heart attack. Since I've been out of the hospital I've been reading and trying to look in to a program that I can do and loose some weight. Of course I want to bring this up to my doctor so how should approach the program?0

This is perfect because I have a question! I want to get into juicing so do have any recommendations on juicers? And that's awesome by the way, keep doing what you're doing0

I am a big fan of IF as well, it works! I do take a cleanse and do a few things to keep my metabolism functioning at full capacity. At most I cleanse two days in a row and it is awesome for shredding and is healthy as long as you drink lots of water!0

There is an intermittent fasting group here. Just search for it in the groups section.0

Ok, I have heard about this, but haven't tried it. So, you eat all your calories from 12noon to 8pm??0
-
I do intermittent fasting and I stand by it!0

I have read about this. I wonder, can you combine intermittent fasting with low-carb high-fat dieting?0

Studies prove it works

There are various methods of IF and alternate day fasting. I typically do a 48 hour cleanse.0 -

Fantastic!! Thanks for the literature. I'm all for empirical data.0 -
A lot of people have good results from IF but it's not for me. Best of luck to you.0

I lost 12 pound in a month doing it! I love it!0

I use IF and it work well for me. I also incorporate a 24 hour fast about three days every two weeks.0

Intermittent fasting is not unhealthy, or at least it shouldn't be. But people can abuse any diet method they want too.
Intermittent fasting is just another way of reaching a calorie deficit. There are different protocols 16:8, 18:6, etc. All this means is you have an eating window of 8 hours, or 6 hours.

This is not typically the longer fasts (which are not new by the way) you see people do. People all around the world will fast for religious reasons.
Another form of intermittent fasting is 5:2. Eating at maintenance for 5 days, eating at 500 (women) and 600 (men) for 2 days. This means you get your entire deficit for the week in 2 days.

Neither of these are crazy fast weight loss. They are simply a method for achieving a HEALTHY calorie deficit. But some people will always choose fast weight loss, sacrificing a larger percentage of existing lean muscle mass in the process.0 -
I incorporate IF last year when I was looking to build lean muscle. It took on a whole new outlook when it came to eating and even spiritual aspects. It works for me and I'll start again after I decease my macros.0

is there a reason you should save your calories for the end of the day rather than eating them in the morning?
I ask because I heard it is better if you eat earlier in the day to give yourself more energy and keep your metabolism up. In my mind I would consider eating my calories between 8am and 4pm but I would like to understand it a little better0 -

Yes. same question here. I've read that starting the day with protein is beneficial for weight loss.0 -

No, there is no advantage to eating early as opposed to later, meal timing doesn't matter especially when you are doing IF. Your metabolism will rise slightly when you eat no matter when you do it but your body doesn't just drop it's metabolism because you eat later in the day, that's a myth. If you prefer to do it earlier than that's up to you and a personal preference.0 -
The IF group has a lot of really knowledgeable people, but to answer questions from TJH2 and Tomk, no reason you couldn't eat your calories 8am-4pm instead of 12-8pm if that works better for you. Most people that I've heard from doing 16:8 (the form of IF mostly referenced by other posters) have an easier time delaying eating after they get up rather than starting the day with food and then not eating all evening.
In general, timing of food means nothing for weight loss, it's the quantity. IF helps some people better keep their calories within targets when they have an eating window than if they spread out those calories over the whole day (it does for me; I usually eat about 2-10pm). There is somewhat controversial data on whether fasting (not eating for 16 consecutive hours) has additional health benefits; you can make your call on what to believe. For me, it's a mental structure that helps me stay within my calories and learn to really recognize hunger (rather than boredom eating) rather than consideration for the supposed benefits from fasting.
TeaBea has it right. Whatever you choose, do your research and do it in a healthy way.1 -
Hey group, I stumbled across IF from reading 'The Obesity Code' and have been doing twice a week fasts from dinner to dinner. On one day after dinner I do not eat again until dinner the next day. I'm finding my weight goes down quite a bit.
The only thing I consume is coffee and then water. When I break my fast I usually go back to eating to my macros. Ie, on the dinner I break the fast it's just a normal dinner in ratio of 40% protein, 40% carbs, 20% fat, but only a third of my daily grams of those macros.
I have been reading about the effect on insulin and find it fascinating...very excited to continue doing this.
Also...the effect on my energy (having more) and on my sleep (getting more and deeper) has been an added side affect.
Happy to share strategies and stories...would love to hear more from folks and the effect it's had on their weight loss goals.
